Can anyone tell me what this is, Is it a juvinile red emperor? It didn,t have the stripes on its body . Caught on a soft plastic at soverign island.

Not a juvenile Red I am afraid.
Looks like a Sea Perch (Nannygai), probably a Large Mouth.

Outsider is right, def a Nannygai and prob a Lge Mouth Nannygai (Lutjanus Malabaricus) i heard of some half decent ones coming from rubble/reefy type areas inside the 'pin years ago. We get them in the inlet and rivers up in Cairns, cool to see one out of there though. Ours like yours are always undersize inshore, they got to be 40cm. When bigger they lose the stripe through the eye.

yep small nannygai we get a lot up here nice fish biggest i have seen in the bay is 65cm but they do get bigger.

Yes it was small only about 30cm and yes the bottom was rubbly reefy just out from a rocky drop off
Had me stuffed never caught one before
