Hi Guys,

looking for some advice as I want to get a berley bucket and 'masher' for my tinny when the weather improves and I can get out to the wrecks (so probably sometime between now and then next 10 years given the current weather that we're getting here in Cairns.... ::)).

My question is that all the online stores that I've been to seem to sell 'em for between $50.00 and over $100.00 and the 'masher' is extra. Would it be cheaper in your experience to get a metal fabricator to make me a stainless steel one and masher or just buy one of the mass produced ones?

a piece of 100mm or 150mm PVC from your local plumbing shop with a screw socket and cap, a couple of bracket wont cost you anywhere near $50. Drill plenty of holes in it and find yourself a masher and you're away

I guess it also depends on what sort of a "scrounger" you are, I have seen short lengths of Aluminium Square tube in sizes that would suit a Burley pot at scrap Metal Merchants, all it needs is an end welded on and some holes drilled in it, and a masher made, I have also seen these made from 50mm plastic pipe, and another bit of the same size, glued into the "flared end" to make it double thickness on the masher end, but then sometimes it is just as easy to go and buy one, those plastic/Nylon ones look OK.

Thanks Capt!

I'd forgotten about the good old PVC piping - made plenty of rod holders out of that when I was a kid, good memories there ::)

The spin drying bowl, out of an old twin tub washing machine if you can find one at a tip or somewhere, is perfect. Just needs a bracket around it to fit to the side of your tinny.

Plaztix - he means the smaller bowl in the twin tub; would probably be about 20cm - 25cm wide; certainly would hold lots of berley ;D

That's right Synful. They are around 10 inches across, and only need a few more holes drilled in the bottom of the bowl, as the holes drilled for spinning only go down to about two inches from the bottom of the bowl if you look at it laterally. It's pretty well suited for berleying, you can whack a couple of frozen blocks of homemade in, and just let it soak through by having the bottom of the bowl juyst below the wAter line.

I just checked, i did have about 3 or 4 a few years back, but i think i gave a couple of 'em away a while back, and kept one for myself.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for that; damn shame that there is no one in FNQ selling them :(

Andrew I was in BCF not long ago an spied a SS (I think)chicken wire berly cage, looked like a square tower 50mm wide and 250mm tall at a guess with a flat lump of lead in the bottom, hang it over the edge or drop to just above the bottom.
Was in a hurry at the time but will be having a better look next visit with a view to buying it myself. Might suit until you get better sorted - the Spanish will be coming back soon:)

cheers fnq

Thanks Scott - will have a look @ BCF this weekend as the weather is pretty crap for any form of fishing so this will be pretty much the 5th weekend that we haven't been able to get out :'(

Are you picking up that I'm a bit 'antsy' to get out in the boat? ::)

Looking to have a crack at the Spanish and macks in general this year now that I have the boat; should be fun in my 4.2m tinny 8-)

Here are some pictures of one I made.
This one has a bracket on it to attach the tube to the handles at the rear of the boat using d-shackles plus a bent bracket below it to keep it clear of the boat.
It has a rope tied around the tube and through the bracket so the tube can be elevated when the boat is under way.
It has a piece of rope tied through the lid to secure it to the tube bracket so the lid won't be lost overboard when loading berley or mulching it through.
The bottom of the tube also has holes drilled through it. This is not visible in the photos.
I use a stainless steel rod with some aluminium checkerplate bolted to it. (sorry, no pics of it)
I made the tube for about $30.
I had the stainless rod and checkerplate from another project.

Hope this helps you.

Here is a berley bomb I made for dropping berley down deep.
It is made from gas pipe.
The top is off a spice shaker bought from Woolworths for $5.
The weight is a piece of rolled up lead.

Greenbeest; thanks for that this is pretty much what I had envisioned for my system.

Don't think that I'll go with the berley bomb that you have though; I was thinking of making a similar hybrid system like the RJayz mentioned earlier, it wouldn't be difficult to do and the 'sliding anchor rope' system has some definite advantages so I'll probably make one of those as well.

Hi Scott,

You were right; went to BCF yesterday and grabbed the large cylindrical one that they had there for $21.00. Cage measured about 20cm high and about 10cm round.

Went to Bunnings earlier and got some PVC piping and screw caps to put on the ends which cost me about $28.00 and I still needed to do all the work. So it's trip back top Bunnings today to take it all back.

I'll post a picture of the cage as soon as I can get my bluetooth working again.

Hi Synful, thats the same as mine ,works a treat ,only problem with it is the hinge rod is made from steel (not stainless) and it rusted solid between trips and broke the next time I used it ,so either give it a hit with some crc after each trip or replace the hinge with a stainless 1.
