How many of you eat Longtailed Tuna?
Often Sometimes Never?

How do you prepare / cook it?

Do you use them for bait or what?

Thanks
Robert

Personally dont mind longys smoked, they are best bled straight away and stored on ice. They do make great flesh baits but more often than not keep one and send the rest back to fight another day.. they're an excellent fighting fish and like all tunas great fun to catch.

Agree with dunny.
Good smoked, but one fish is plenty to keep.
Now bonito or yellowfin, thats another story...............
Cheers!

I find it amusing how few people actually eat them. If they are bled properly, then they turn out no different to any other pelagic when cooked up.
Use a short knife to make a cut behind the pectoral fins on the main arterys and then do their throat and you should have a healthy amount of blood flowing all over your pristine carpet. I only eat the shouler section of each fillet and they cook up a treat.
the trick is to sear them till they are almost half way cooked, flip them and sear the other side. You'll then find that they will slow cook themselves through the remaining pink section and, if thye were bled properly, come out a pure white coloured flesh. Sprig of basil or parsley, lemon juice and a side of chips and you're laughing!

What about good old sashimi??

Its easy as and if you put the thought of what it actually is out of your mind, its pretty bloody good.

Couldn't have too much of it though.

There are pleanty of tuna that are best left for bait but the LTs are right up there with the YFT. If you don't think so then please release them so they can find their way to my table;) . I'd gladly turn down any of these snapper and pearlies ect that are so highly rated for a fresh feed of LT that is just seared on both sides and rare in the middle. I don't think I'm alone with the fillets fetching $35kg and even the crap sold in the supermarkets going for at least $25kg. If bled properly BEFORE knocking the fish on the head and iced down ASAP and leave the tail wrist left for bait then your laughing. If you are going to cook it all the way....then I think you should just stick to canned tuna;D .
