Gulps on the GBR

Just wanting to know if anyone has had success with the larger plastics...5,6,7 inch fishing for red throat,trout etc...should I invest or go with the usual bait?

yeah i heard they are very prductive but they get chewwed up alot by your typical razoured teeth reef species. i would by a few snapbacks too so the last much longer. i heard of some guys buying over $600 of gulp and they were all used by the 3rd trip up there so it can become rather expensive.

I used gulps in Townsville and found I caught a very different range of fish to the bait fishos. I was pulling up large trevelly, tuna and mackeral while the bait guys got mostly nanygi, it worked out well because I was fishing for sport and they where fishing for food. I would take the plastics but use both when you're there and get a bit of variety happening. I actually fished bait on a jig head which I liked much better than a massive snapper lead. Take a couple of vertical jigs up as well.

Money wise I probably whent through $50-$60 on an overnight trip.

Fishing between 20-50m I used a 1once jig head, just make sure you use STRONG hooks.

If I were to be fishing the reef’s up north I would be buying the cheapest plastics money can buy. Seriously, the fish that live in those surroundings eat whatever comes within reach. I fished Lizard Island when I was an early teen with Mr Twisters and got well and truly cleaned up every cast. That was 31 years ago.

Here here, this is my belief also, tie the well presented bait on if it helps, a nice piece of strip squid or fish flesh (butterflied even) and you cannot go wrong, plastics is about presentation and the style of placement and motion it presents, not the fact it is made of plastic IMO.

I was useing 5" jerk baits in pearl white as well as squidgies in drop bear off the jetty at Daydream Island over Easter, caught trout, cod, morwong, parrot and a few un-stopables, includeing what I think was a big GT.
Very effective way to fish, but would be expensive.

Think i'll spend a couple of bucks and try a pack ..never used them before...lets hope they get good fish...not rats

On a recent trip to Airlie beach ,I tied on the ever faithful 3"shrimp in new penny colour ,Caught a stack of fish on them from cod , trout,jack and trevs.
That'll be my choice when I go there next.

Don't limit yourself to gulps, I got my best fish on a saltwater assasin and my father in law got a huge jack on an unscented aswell. Try everything!

Another Ausfisher has had great success on the snapback range as well. Caught plenty of Nanny's on them in white/pink.
