I was spinning off Burleigh Heads yesterday with a TSS4 and landed one spotty .about 10 casts later I heard a plop, looked down and it was the drag nut off the front of the reel in the water ! bloke at tackle shop said he had sold about 6 of these for TSS4 reel so far.has this happened to anyone else ?

yep, it happens. got to check the drag every couple of casts. Must be something with the final run of those reels before they discontinued them.

yeah mate it was the type of washer they used there was no give in it and it caused it to loosen even when winding at high speed,

Yes .....it is a common problem.

Try a couple of turns of threadseal tape on the shaft thread & also some reel grease on the rubber seal under the drag knob.

Should help.

I'll have to look at my TSS4- never had that problem.

Not really sure why the drag knob would fall off if a fish took a run or if winding in at high speed - but accept that it happens.

If the top drag washer, which should be a metal washer, is keyed to the shaft, and not to the spool, then the drag knob shouldn't come lose if a fish takes a run, or if the drag slips under an enthusiastic retrieve.

I have two TSS4's. An early 90's model and one about two years old. When I put the old spool on the new reel it unwound and layed the line poorly and I had to shim it to get it working. When the correct spool is used there is no issue.
I have also heard of it happening with some of the recently manufactured reels.

I bought one about 18 months back and wondered why the drag knob would only wind on about 2 turns. I pulled the drag washers out and got the schematic out and found that I had one too many metal washers in the stack. Took one out and no more problem.:)
