Tailor poppers

Greetings all!

Can anyone give me a few pointers on different styles of tailor poppers and the conditions that they are likely to be used in?

I'm very new to the game and have so far only caught one half way decent fish on a popper.

I have about a dozen home made poppers ranging from 3'' to 5''. All lightly weighted at the tail end and mostly with one tail end treble. They have a 45 degree face and come in a range of colours from natural mullet and mackeral to fluoro orange and black stripes.

I've seen some beautiful poppers in the bait and tackle shops from $10 to $25. Some are clear plastic and very natural.


My poppers throw up a nice spray, dart from side to side from time to time and even duck under the surface every now and again. They are visible.

Are they suitable for most conditions or are the clear/naturals better suited to one or more types of conditions?

The few local guys that I've seen seem to use home-mades.

PS Go and try them isn't likely to be helpful.... something like 'stop start natural poppers in clear water has worked for me and buying a few lures might be worth it' would be appreciated.

Whatever you go with make sure its gold coloured.Tailor cant seems to resist gold poppers.

The style of lure that you describe is very similar to the ones i'm using. Have you ever seen the dizzy lures? They just have a 45 degree cut at the front and skitter from side to side and skip along.
Manchild has the right idea with gold. Also gold/brown or silver/blue. Have a look at thte halco rooster poppers. I use these and dizzys exclusively and get alot of fish. Make sure whatever you are using is capable of a steady retrieve that when you need it to be slow will still work without just floating along.

Those ones you describe are the classic broomstick poppers and I have caught Tailor on them. I have had more success with shorter ones as my 6" ones seemed to get thrown more often
The Pencil Popper works well and casts a long way considering the weight and shape
Go try them when the Tailor are on.

i know that the storm chug bugs work pritty good on every thing and have seen lots of people and i have landed a few choppa on them so would put one of them on as my first lure to chuck. then id go the roosta popper as you can cover more water with them(they cast a mile) and they are noiser than the chug bug and if that dose not work id go the cotton cordel pencil popper and try flat out retreves as well as walking the dog with it on the surface. and if that dose not work them i put on a 30g halco twisty slice and flog the water with that. the twisty never fails

'Walking the dog'? How do you work the popper to do that? I may be doing it already without realising......or perhaps not.

Would I be correct in thinking that varying the retrieve, rather than flat out is the go?
