Just got back from my first week at Iluka for the year - and only 4766 new posts on Ausfish to read! Looks like a late night coming up.

Headed for Iluka last Thursday - an early trip for me as I usually head that way in the winter, but I thought the recent heavy rains in northern NSW might have flushed the fish down towards the river mouth.
Arrived just after lunch and after unpacking headed for the northern wall to try to catch our dinner. The tide was perfect for fishing the washes at my favourite spot and the bream were very cooperative. Pulled seven good bream in no time and a reasonable flathead, a bit unusual in that spot.
Next morning it was back to the same spot for a similar result - nine good bream and another flathead. I fished the same spot for the next four days (until the tides became unsuitable at the dawn session) and pulled some magnificent bream every time. The best went 39cm and quite a few were around the 36cm mark. As well I was busted off frequently by big fish that I couldn't keep out of the rocks even on a 25 pound leader - probably big bream but I did release a small jew, so you never know).
The winds were pretty strong easterlies most of the week with quite a decent swell, so fishing the beaches was almost impossible. I managed one beach session in Shark Bay on Wednesday but only scored three nice bream - no sign of any tailor, although there were some very good ones caught recently at Woody Head according to a couple of people I talked to.
The locals in the know were pulling quite a few luderick from the river, but I'm not the greatest still-water fisherman for luderick and I only managed four in two sessions. Had a shot for luderick in the washes at the Iluka Bluff on Tuesday - the water looked really good with plenty of suds coming over the rocks but I couldn't get a single down - that might be a winter only location.
On Wednesday I had a couple of hours throwing soft plastics for flathead behind the rocks at the Bluff. Took 2 flathead - one about 36cm (released) and another close to 70cm, who released herself just after I beached her and before I could grab the camera. It was a nice way to finish a great week, standing waist deep in crystal clear water throwing plastics to the edge of the rocks and retrieving through the sandy gutter.
Coming home I ran along Shark Bay beach to Black Rock campground instead of down the highway - the wind was down and the surf was very fishable, the best conditions of the whole week. Them's the breaks - I can't complain after some great fishing every day.

No mate - that's the northern side of the Iluka Bluff where I catch a lot of luderick in the winter. The flathead were caught on the sand just to the left of those pictures. Most of the bream were caught from the northern breakwater at the mouth of the Clarence river which is about a kilometre south of the Bluff

Hi Silent
When you log on to Ausfish the opening page tells you when you last logged on and how many new posts since you last logged on. Imagine how many there would be when you got back from a 3-4 months trip round the top-end!

Some nice fish there Freeeedom....well done.

Shame you couldnt fish the beach in comfort...reckon you may have scored a Jew off the beach after all the rain.

Were many people fishing the Wall....Normally this time of year the livebaiters rule the wall chasing longtails and Macks......But from what I have heard the floods have played havock with the pelagics.....??????

Hi Pete

At times there was the odd fisho throwing lures (mostly hard bodies and poppers) from the wall but I didn't see a single pelagic caught all week. The wall was also fairly empty with no more than half a dozen anglers at any one time and most of them fishing the gutter in the first hundred metres on the ocean side or from the beaches on either side of the wall.

Both caught on a Berkley 4" Minnow Grub Golden Sardine - after I'd thoroughly worked over the same area with a prawnstar imitation for about 30 minutes without a touch.

Good result there mate.

Did you hear of any big jew being caught? Just thought there might have been some hanging around the mouth, that's all.

I was supposed to go down there last Saturday for a week, but it didn't happen. No doubt my fishing mate will let me know on Sunday how he went.

Have you ever had much success along Shark Bay? I've always found it to be pretty featureless, not many gutters etc, although you can get plenty of pipis from there. Throwing out the front of the Bluff can be pretty rewarding, depending on the tides and conditions of course. There's a little area about 15 metres wide with no rocks in front of it and we've caught good bream, reasonable spangleds and even drummer there.

TOL

Hi TOL

I didn't hear of any decent jew being caught. The bloke at the bait shop hadn't heard of any either. The little one I released was the only one he heard of recently, but he thought they were about due. Note that the water is still quite dirty and fresh at the bottom of the tide.

Shark Bay has some very good gutters at the moment, especially in the top half where it's more open to the surf. You can only travel the beach from about half tide down to half tide up because of the erosion from the heavy weather. Like most surf gutters (unless you can find some rocks) each gutter seems to hold only one or two bream, so you need to keep moving every now and again. Didn't see any pipis on Shark Bay this trip.

I know the spot at the Bluff you mentioned. When I'm down there in the winter and the seas are calm you'll find me there at dawn as my first choice location. I've caught many lovely tailor there, plus good bream in the washes if there are no tailor about. You can also catch big luderick right at your feet there in the right conditions. I've not caught a drummer there yet, but last year when I was there a bloke caught a couple at a spot a bit further south. It requires very calm conditions to fish it though. Years ago I lost a rod at that spot when I decided it was more important to save myself than the rod when I got hit by a big green wave that came up onto the rocks unexpectedly. You gotta love the place haven't you?

Sounds like you had had a great trip mate, had a bit of a throw in the corner at shark bay last weekend for 6 lizzards the best going close to 60cm. Only the one bream but hey it was making the best of a bad situation with a 30knt southerly blowing.

From what the grape vine tells me the boys fishing the beach for jew are having trouble gettting a bait to stay in the water long enough. Sharks are thick.
