Hi,
Is there such a thing as a snag-free or snag-proof lure/soft plastic rig?
If so, how can I create one?
I fish around mangroves and near rocks a lot and get snagged a little too much lately.
Or maybe it's my way of casting/retrieving that needs tuning????

A texan rigged plastic is fairly snag resistant, Google it for a pic.
Certain lures are built to be snag resistant..like spinnerbaits, with the hook facing up and the blades to keep it spinning and swimming upright.
I make my lipless lures, Jackalls etc more snag proof by clipping off the lead treble hook. It makes them snag less and doesn't seem to affect my hook up rate too much.
If you get snagged, you can try a few techniques to dislodge your lure. For starters, if you feel yourself getting pinned in the rough stuff. Stop and don't put pressure on the line to sink the hooks in any further. Put your reel in free spool and wave it back and forth, this can transmit energy down the line and actually push the lure back off the snag. If this doesn't work, point your rod at the lure and pull line out between the reel and the first rod guide...draw it back like a bow and let it spring from your finger..Just like a bow and arrow, once again, this transmitts energy down your line. These work well for me because I crush most of the barbs on my hooks so they come out easily. If these don't work. take your shoes off and get ready for a swim. Although this bit is easier for me as I fish freshwater;)

if you are using hard body lures change the trebles for Decoy single hooks facing with the sharp end upwards.
Your local tackle shop may hve them if not they will get them in for you I am sure.

As mentioned above are all good ways of reducing your snag rate. Another method for soft platics is to reduce the head weight if you seem to be fouling the bottom heaps. The problem with snag free rigs is they can sometimes reduce the likelyhood of the hook sticking in the fish aswell, learning to become a better caster and recognising when you've bottomed out etc is ultimately going to be your best defence against bottoming out.

Mangroves are a pian..... all those soft pointy things comming up off the bottom just waiting for your hook>:(
with plastics or any bait try fishing with little or on weight.
I was fishing a couple of weeks ago with some guys..... one bloke was using fairly heavy jig heads and getting snaged all the time, another bloke was fishing a rig that looked like a grapling hook.... but very little weight and getting snagged rarely.... I was fishing no weight at all except the hook, swivel and the bait...... I think I snaged twice and didn't lose a hook.
guess which two landed the most fish ( such that they were).
you could fish poppers or floater divers or fizzers.
fishing a single hook paternosta rig is another answer so you have a reasonably heavy sinker right at the end with the hook on a trace anout a foot up the line.....work the lengths so the hook trace is shorter than the sinker trace.....that wany you can kep the hook off the bottom.
bury the hook tip in the bait.....
fish under a float
use hard bodies that have a nose down action, like lipless crank baits.
pause immediately you bump something in the hope( hope) you lure will rise & not snag.
Ahhh well its all part of the fun;D ......... no its not..>:( ;D >:( .. I hate that.
cheers

Don't worry about getting snagged too much because you know you are fishing in the area with the fish where the sangs are.

use squidgy resin heads much better because yes it still sinks but very slowly and once twitched can suspend for about 15 seconds on a squidgy flickbait give these a try great on bream.
