Black Beauty!

Greetings all!

Before I let "Black Beauty" (a.k.a. Snyder MT144) out of the stable I need to know whether I should varnish between the guides. Are there issues of weight on a rod this size or uv protection of the fibreglass?

give it a polish with Nu Finish or a similar good quality polish...

Don't put on any sort of epoxy or lacquer between the guides, it just adds unneccessary weight, and when you get a serious bend in it it might start to crack. The factory fibreglass coat is well treated and will last a very long time if you take care of it. We have ancient snyder glas rods which have been used millions of times and been bashed around on fraser island alot, and they are still going strong. They are built for rough treatment IMO.

I built one recently, it's on a 13'6 FT162 5w and is bute.

If you epoxy the whole blank it will be a disaster when you try to replace a guide in the future. You will have a huge amount of trouble trying to get a good finish on it

I mean that rod varnish stuff they sell you! Not epoxy!

Even I , as a beginner, know that you don't epoxy between the guides! (Do you?).

Keep well clear of the rod varnish, Rob!
Personally I give my rods one full coat of epoxy, the last coat I put on, protects the blanks a little more IMO.
Choice is yours, but make sure you pick sunny, dry weather!
