Picked up some RG 58 plugs,no solder type today, and a barrel joiner,to suit.
Amnyone had any experience with rhe no solder type. They crimp,by the looks of them.
Also,is there a distribution box of some sort, for Coax cable.

Where are you mate? I have all the tools for terminating coax, but on the northside.

They could also be the type that screw in? Check inside the back end to see if it has a thread in there.

they crimp if you are using the f type connectors which give you a better connection, you need to strip the coax to the right size then crimp with the correct tool .
or as mentioned they could be a screw in type in which case ensure it is a tidy install as it is easy to have a poor connection .

there are a few different distribution boxes available , electrical stores like ideal electrical can show you .

Thanks everyone.

I bought the non solder type, thinking that I was doing the right thing, but dont have the crimping tools.
The plug has a loose outer ferrol, that needs to be crimped.
The Real Andy,I am at Logan Village ,half way to Tamborine from Waterford.
Here are some pics, similar to what I bought
Gee,some of those links were great.

Do the boxes come with a bulk head socket,or do you just put on what you need to do the job?

I gather this is for your radio.

From the picture it looks like crimp shield and solder centre pin.

Id have a crimper to suit But I'm flat out till easter getting a couple of jobs out.

Try giving Finga a PM he may be able to help.

Soldering coax is an aover rated experience..... the centre conductor is a doddle.....to do a proper job on the braid you need an iron with some go.... even then it is very easy to not get it right.
Have done plenty in the past but there is no way I would be soldering the braid on coax from choice.

Just an aside.
If there is any way you can get away with out a joiner, do it...particularly on a boat.......It would be preferable to re terminated both ends and have a continuous coax with no joins.

Is this 27Mhz or VHF?

cheers

Oldboot,
I thought of Finga,I will see if he is about somewhere.
The cable is for my GPS,external antennae.
The cable needs to have the plug removed,in order to fit through the pole, and folding base. Then into the cabin area, and then a new plug fitted.

The reason for the thought of a barrel joiner, was for ease of removal.
It could be done in one length, if you dont recommend it.
Thanks for the input.
Regards David

Sorry mate, my link doesn't apply!
I thought we were on about F connectors, but now we have N and pl259 etc!
Sorry to mislead you.
Ask someone knowledgable, local to you, to show you once, and you will get it right every time after that.
