Greetings all!

First..... I know nothing about engines and never will understand their complexities.

However! I have an old Mariner 20hp on my tinny. Recently it has started to leak a mix of black oil and water from the top of the propeller seal after I take it out of the water. The engine has also been a bit more smoky than usual.

Any ideas what the problem could be so that I don't look so daft when I take it to the boat shop?

Regards, Rob.

G'day

If it's coming out from inside the prop (where the prop nut is).... It's normal.... Have you been using a different oil or too much oil in your fuel lately?

If there's some oil and its milky looking dripping from the seal around the back of the propeller, then you have done that seal, more than likely fishing line has cut it up

If it smells like gear oil, your seals are gone or the filler /vent screw washer is missing. If it smells like petrol it's just normal residue from trolling and idling. It mixes with the exhaust carbon and drips out of the prop. To check for water intrusion in the gear case, just undo the bottom filler screw and let a bit of gear oil run into a glass jar. If the oil is milky or water comes out, the seals are gone. If clear you are OK.
