I see in B***T**T that Mercury have announced a 350hp Verado outboard.

Just how big do members think outboards will get?

PS.
Also that the J D Power awards for customer satisfaction was won by Optimax for the third year.

Put that one up especially for a ETEC fan;) ;) ;D ;D ;D

I guess it could be that Merc won it on the experience they have fixing so many Motors under warranty, where the other dealers do not get such experience!!!

ONLY KIDDING!!! I read that as well.

i dont know how big in HP OB's will get but if you look at automotoive technology (cars and trucks) as a guide, you could saftly expect 500hp within 5 yrs

I don't see the logic for it... I thought boats were being designed lighter and more streamlined, just how fast do we want to scoot about in these things. I like to take my time and enjoy, my 225 pushes my old haines about with no troubles and plenty fast enough for me, I thought the idea was fishing boats not racing boats :)

How big will be dictated by the boat manufacturers. Big sportfishers like Grady White, Yellowfin etc are where these engines are targeted to get into the inboard (petrol and diesel) market and even cutting down quads/tripple set ups on some rigs.

Those Verados and V8 Yammie will be good for double that horsepower in the future if require.

I wish some one would build a 200hp the size of a 50hp. Now that would have everybody talking. Be lucky to cast around either of the 350s

I guess that the actual HP is practicaly unlimited, way back in the early days of I think F1 they where getting 1,000HP out of 1500CC Engines, reving at about 30K RPM, so I guess the "trick" will be getting the big HP in a lightweight fuel efficient package, to get the HP is a breeze, to get it at the price, size and fuel usage we all want will be the ultimate goal! Unless we all learn to go slow and take it easy, maybe if I had of done that way back in my early Boating years, I would not have the stuffed back I have now!

I saw a picture the other day with 10 250 hp yammys on the back. Thats a total of 2500hp, I guess they're not making them big enough for that boat yet.

And how many races does an F1 engine last? Don't want to be picking up a new engine for every second fishing trip.

I realise that, but the actual HP outut is not the hard part, thats what I was getting at, the hard bit is making it small, light, fuel efficent, reliable and affordable, all at the same time, some of those parameters are easily met, but all is not so easy! that was my point.

It's not about engine capacity it's about getting the horsepower to a propeller in an efficient manor, 30 years ago like today if physics knew of a cost effective way to get 1000hp through a bulb housing small enough to allow the boat to travel faster than 80 -100km/h without blowing out (creating a compression wave) therefore reducing all further thrust to nil and at every other speed the drag would be just a joke then they would be everywhere today, a single engine will always be lighter than 2, big engines are easy to build.

The best we have today is reduction gearing under the powerhead to allow a smaller bulb than would have been possible with a big pitch prop, trouble is that can only go so far.

Running an outboard with a bulb the size of a pumpkin under the water is not very trick!:)

Very fast outboards have for decades put out more HP than 350 (there was even a stock 300hp engine sold in the 80s) these outboards use a setup method to convert the HP into thrust that only VERY fast boats can make work, it's a catch 22 for everyone else but them and their market is too small to bother building a 500hp+ engine for.

cheers fnq

How high they go will depend on how high petrol prices go. Who wants a 500HP outboard that chews 3L per km? :)

I heard that suzuki are bringing a 400 hp out not sure if this is true or not but who knows.
