Went for another mission to my local jack spot to have another crack at the title after the week before loosing every fish. No herring on offer so i got the handy bait pump out and went over to the shallows and pumped up some nippers then managed to catch some whiting for livies. i was hesitant at fisrt cause of the large size of the whiting but thats all i could get and it was getting dark, so i had four whiting and two friends that wanted to get there first JACKS. so we had our livies out and i was the first to hook up and after a quick fight he was on the surface photo then released(50cm) my PB, all within ten mins the night started to look promising then my mates bait went off and he managed to land his (47cm) then nothing for 20mins finaly my other mate hooked up didn't have the drag up enough, even after me stressing to him that he has to lock it up all the way expecially where we fish, he go dusted so then we gave him that last bait and it was like a big table size whiting and the thing got smashed and pulled off the hooks so none for him hhaahah. but good to know that jacks happily hit big baits maybe on the real big ones i should give them a little bit of line which is almost a shore lost jack where i fish.

Welcome to the 50 club. Your a fast learner for your first season ;-).

Yes jacks will hit livies up to 30 cm no probs. They have eyes bigger than their mouths, and will eat anything big.

cheers
Andrew

Sam
you fishing in the area I think you are?????
my mates say things have been a little quiet but looks like it may be firing up again.
btw....the boys love using big whiting for jacks , they reckon they can't help themselves for a whiting.

it sure does have some huge jacks in the bwick , some of them are over the 8kg mark and need x-heavy gear to get the sods out.

Hey Sam,
I got a nice jack last week on a small lure, 8kg braid and a small spin outfit. Not sure exactly how big it was as I didnt measure it before I let it go. I would guess it was around the 4kg mark. Took a pic of it on a 40kg feed bag to give you an idea of size. Good fun. Cheers, Steve.

Sam
was talking to Wally the other night and his pb jack for last year was 84cm and said he got smashed by much bigger fish than that.....84cm jack...I'd be checking my dacks for lumps in the back end if I hooked a jack over that size.
also another fish was taken offshore that was close to 15kg.
I reckon you would know where I'm talking about.

i certainly do pickers. i've dived it and seen jacks to 15-16kg. i wanna get out there and drop some live baits down on there heads. but hard to get off that spot dew to the reef. and have to anchor up and get it spot on.
