A FERRY terminal in the Brisbane River linking Moreton Bay and the City has been mooted as part of a plan to make the region Australia's No. 1 eco-tourism attraction.

Several routes have been proposed involving public and private investment, which would take in major attractions including Moreton, North Stradbroke and Coochiemudlo islands.

The Brisbane Marketing proposal has the backing of state and local governments, but the aim is to secure private investment as well.
Invest Brisbane director Daniel Havas said the project had already proven popular.

"We have seen interest from investors both in Europe and the Middle East and would expect this interest to continue in-line with the increasingly large leisure market represented by these regions," he said.

Mr Havas said Moreton Bay was under-utilised, under-developed and inaccessible.

"The region is a world-class ecotourism destination, an incredible natural asset that is comparable with the Great Barrier Reef, in terms of diversity and quality of activities," he said.

Latest figures show Brisbane attracts about 14 million people from interstate and overseas each year, but most travel to the Gold or Sunshine coasts before Moreton Bay.

"With improved transport infrastructure, this would enable the region to more effectively take advantage of the lucrative day-trip and business tourism market," Mr Havas said.

He said Brisbane's popularity as a business destination was growing at a "phenomenal rate", with corporate guests up by 17 per cent in the past year.
Part of the proposal is to make use of existing Brisbane River CityCat services and terminals.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said he supported the project, but it was still in the early stages.

"I'm really excited about this," he said. "Moreton Bay is a wonderful place that could offer so much potential for sustainable tourism – it could really be a drawcard."

He said the proposal also had support of other mayors, including Don Seccombe in Redland Shire and Caboolture Shire's Joy Leishman.

"We've been working together on this project – we've had Brisbane Marketing assisting us in that," he said.

Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said Moreton Bay had long been overlooked as a significant tourism destination, but needed private investment for the plan to proceed.

"We believe there is a strong business case for commercial entrepreneurs to invest in Moreton Bay," she said.

EPA and AMCS have stated that the bay is over populated and is in danger of wiping out dugong, bird and turtle species due to over population and boat traffic. DP & F say fishing is sustainable in moretion bay yet closures only affect fisherman.

Invest Brisbane director Daniel Havas said the Bay was under-utilised, under-developed and inaccessible.???

These ferries and tour and dive groups, use boats, propellers and anchours that can kill dugongs and turtles and destroy seagrass beds in the bay. If you look at the papers picture of the routes these ferries take it is through or near 4 green zones if im correct (Cape moreton, Peel, Near Harries etc)
Tourism groups and dive groups support AMCS and EPA closures of fishing areas but still add to the problem, the only difference is MONEY. Another kick in the guts for a family of fisherpersons.

have your say

What a crock! Totally ignores the fact that there are existing operators, none of whom show any signs of raking in huge bucks. Probably put up by someone with a pie in the sky dream, who has bought a bit of publicity. Get a tame journo to call the Lord Mayor about the idea and he has to respond with something positive, unless it's clearly contrary to policy.

My comment to the CM below.

How the hell is this protecting the creatures in the Bay? More big cruisers and vessels going high speed through the Bay increasing the potential of boat strikes. So its OK to have "eco tourism" and the mighty dollar according to our beloved Labor Government, yet if you want to be a recreational fisherman in Moreton Bay you must be locked out for the sake of sustainability and saving the dugongs and turtles.

Let's get real people. Its all about MONEY. So much for all the EPA closures about caring for the environment Ms Bligh!! Pfffft

Commercial entrepeneurs to invest in Moreton Bay? So we'll have our very Mirage Resorts, and the Kenneth Williams's of the world will have carte blanche to do what they like. So, really the govt are doing us a favour in that there will be no fish left to catch due to destruction of nurseries and natural habitat.

Viva la revolution. Put 'em all up against a bloody wall.

reality check to the tourism gurus..how many people do you think come to look at Brisbane..I can see them now in some far off land..look hon..this brisbane looks great..let's go there..but make sure we do not go to the Gold or Sunshine Coasts.

get real..no one really comes to Brisbane for a holiday..nice place to live but not the ideal international holiday destination

These are eco friendly ferries people....dugongs and turtles actually don't mind getting run over by these craft as they know that all this crap is being done for their greater good.

This is your captain speaking, coming up on the right hand side of the eco ferrie you will see Mud Island which is....Oooops, what the hell did we just hit....a what ? a Turtle hey...probably already dead from swallowing a hook....as I was saying.....Mud Island, which will soon be dug up to build yet another runway at our eco friendly airport, so more of you eco friendly tourists can visit our wonderful eco friendly city.
The EPA said they probably shouldn't do it but hey, money talks right he he he... WHOA... LOOK OUT, almost skittled a dugong.

My comments werent accepted by the Courier Mail either.
I just wanted to add that the dredging of Toondah Harbour to remove I think it was 20,000 Cubic Metres of Silt, mud, etc and dumping it Mud Island is an absolute disgrace.
To have a dump in the middle of Moreton Bay completly makes a joke of EPA zoning restrictions.
A big Thank You to Chris Ryan for havin a go.
Get 'ur Public Submissions in by 7th March everyone!
