These arent my photos or comments, just some pics sent to me of a a guy in a newish Toyo with a boat doing a pretty big river crossing at the Condamine recently, thing i love is the boat, the kids face and the photographers comments, they where not expecting this guy to get through this big current without scrapes on the side, note the current took off his number plate;D

I have done the same but under very different circumstances.
Only because we had to when i was in the police force in western queensland
In a flood we had to get to where we were going and with 6 inches of water up your windscreen and water pouring in through the vents made it very scary.
I have seen cockies 4x4 wash away out there.
I would not attempt it with a child in the vehicle and the ###### in the photos
is just that. A ######.

Hey Guys,

Admittadly, that was a crazy thing to attempt, especially with a boat in tow.

The guy obviously new the limitations of his cruiser.

It just goes to show the benefit of a having a diesel engine with a snorkel.

But then agian, plenty have tried similiar water crossings and paid with thier life

Cheers Steve99

FOOL!!! A snorkel to keep water out of engine but what to keep water out of electrics? Modern diesels don't go real well without good spark. :o

Na, that was ok. If he knew the road and where the sides where. Thats why we have 4x4's. Each to their own. I had a 5" suspension lift and a 2" body lift in a (4.5 litre petrol) cruiser and it handled water halfway up the front window. I noticed he didnt put a tarp accross his bullbar.
RESPECT.

What a w.a.n.k.e.r
Knobs like this the put the lifes of the SES at risk
And with a kid in the car??? Not likely to get a father of the year award.

I have the full power point presentation. The shots here dont tell you, but normaly the water is 6 - 7 metres below the bridge, long drop if you drift over the side.

Yeah, me too Bungie, and you are right. Sure it is an awesome vehicle, and he may be an expert, but to risk the life of that kid is unacceptable
As others have said, the motor still needs electricity to make it run, so it is not invincible down there..
Perhaps the boat was there as a standby ?
Still, an amazing feat for the car, but it still doesn't mean he isn't a tool

Awesome

A great ad for Toyota,

but ######## of the year award for doing it with a child in the car.

These new cruisers are not like the old ones
There are a series of connectors in the motor area to control amd monitor the injector system air flow turbo. the ECU lives in the dash under the glovebox

If you get water into the connectors in the engine bay the unit will stop dosent matter about the snorkle the connectors control fuel injection
You need to spray the connectors with battery terminal spray or another type of sealant. This wont guarantee that they are waterproof but it helps

I was sent this powerpoint and the only time I would attempt a crossing like that is if there was a life threatening situation NOT just to get across

I would also be considering putting some sandbags or other weight in the back of the ute to maintain traction with the road surface against the current

That's another from me too. What an idiot. No matter how many times that fool has done that, it only takes one error and he is gone.>:(

Hi Far side
We have just started selling those type of connectors and you are right, they are not rated to the appropriate IP rating for being submerged, only sprayed or momentarily dunked in water.
Anyway, this is the sort of stuff that gives the do gooders ammo on why 4wds should be banned etc.
Perhaps Toyota could use it as a commercial, but at the end when he gets out and does the leap in the air, the song can say "Oh what a ######, in a Toyota"

Not detracting from the serious side, but some people I know would have suggested it was a Nissan driver in that Toyo ::) :P

There is a saying there somewhere... how does it go ?

That boat is floating right?

Cammy
14-02-2008, 11:01 PM
i WOULD do that, if

1. It wasnt my car
2.It wasnt my boat
3.There was no child
4.If i had a scuba suit on incase i get stuck when it rolls over.

otherwise im on the sidelines;D

It is one thing to do something stupid with your vehicle that could put your life at risk but he was responsible for that little fella's life as well which in my opinion makes him much more than just an idiot. He is the worst type. A selfish careless idiot. I have been in water half that depth but flowing very fast and it was enough to shift my Pajero sideways. I would never attempt something as stupid as that regardless.

He Might Be Driving A Toyota! But He Is A Total Yoyo Imo.
It Wouldn't Matter How Well He" Knew His Car" Steve99, He Could Not Possibly Conceive And Prepare For Every Eventuality That Could Arise During The Crossing. It Seems With The Amount Of Sideways Action Going On, It Would Have Only Needed A Couple More Inches Of Water And It Would Have Been Curtains!
Another Point Raised By Bendover Is Also Moot. So What If He Knew The Road And How Wide It Was. The Road Could Have Been Totally Washed Away And He Would Have Driven Straight Into The Hole. Tata Tojo!
A Rule Of Thumb When Driving In Water. " If You Can't Walk It And Stay Upright, You Shouldn't Drive It." Having Done Advanced Off Road Driver Training, It Makes Me Sick To See This Sort Of Behaviour From People As Thoughtless As This.
My 2 Bob's Anyway. Geoff
