Not every Dad can say that his brood enjoy coming out for a fish with him, especially when they might be 15 and usually enjoy things like sleep overs and shopping.
I can't believe how many previous fishing trips with my girls have ended up very ordinary. Try as I might, either it was too hot, or one of them got seasick, or no fish wanted to play ball, and the boredom would set in. The question every father dreads to hear - " When are we going home??" I must give them credit, of late, the poor things tended to just lay their heads on whatever was available - the dashboard, Mum's shoulder, the side of the canopy....while Dad would be frantically sorting out tangles, rebaiting and trying to keep as many lines in the water - Long after the Kids had given up and would prefer to be anywhere else but in a small boat and an increasingly grumpy father who only wants one thing, for the kids to catch a decent fish.:-/
Today was a perfect opportunity to turn things around, and hopefully spend some quality time with my 15YO daughter Kelly. Yesterday, it seems, I was changing nappies and burping her on my knee. Today, I attempted yet again, to give her a memorable trip out with her father. I am running out of time! Here she is, 15, and only caught one other decent fish in her life, a Mackeral while jigging for live bait. ( that's another story)
To be honest, I thought a relaxed approach was in order, I would take her for a sight see around Peel if that's all she wanted, but a little more inspiration was coming from her best friend who has been begging for a trip out with us, because she loves fishing. Not this trip unfortunately.
What a perfect day!! The stage was set, I gave her my best Dropshot plastics Rod, set everything up perfectly, by 8.00am she had boated 1 x 38cm, 1x 42cm snapper, a Cod, a sweetlip, and heaps of throwbacks.....but we only kept 4 snaps for the table...... And 2 steamtrains that did not slow down in the 10 second fight she had with them. I doubt if I could have done any better. By the 1st unstoppable, she had mastered pulling fish in like a seasoned fisho, so there was simply nothing we could have done.
Awesome!! She could not beleive the strength these fish had, and I think she will be out with me again some time soon.

Great catch and good memories Brian! That's what fishing is all about and I feel sorry for those that never had or will have that experience.

Well done, Jeff.

Inspirational. My daughter and son are both a bit younger and many an outing with them has me running around baiting hooks and untangling lines whilst they become bored because the fish won't play the game.
Glad to hear your efforts have paid off - not just in tabling a couple of good fish.

She will if I keep letting her use my best Berkley dropshot rig!!

Who would have thought? All the times I've been out in my boat which is older than Kelly, and only now, finally had everything work in our favour.
Good on ya Scalem!!!

Kelly was up at 4.00am, which is very rare indeed. Her beauty sleep has also been priority over the years. No arguement it has helped, but I am a little biased.:-*

It's hard work isn't it Dave. When it does come together, and you see the amount of fun she has watching 30 mtrs of line stripping off the spool, all the re rigging in the world is worth it.:D

Great stuff Scalem. I think my most enjoyable trips are with my girls. They don't like the before dawn starts but are keen for everything else.
A two weeks ago I was desperate for to take the boat for a run and the girls jumped at the chance. Bayfisher tagged along and we ran the Rainbow/Rouse in about 20 knots looking for Macs . No luck with these but the girls scored a few good Squid on the way round. A trip like that is still worth more than baqgging out with a more serious crew
Cheers

Can't agree with you more Neil. I don't pretend to have all the secrets, but I know the value of a brilliant day on the water with family.

I have to say Scalem there was something very special seeing you zooming along with Kelly by your side. It is something that I have not seen a lot of in the past and I could feel your excitement to have her with you. I hope that she enjoyed it as much as you did and choses to come along more frequently because that moment out on the water with your kids regardless of age always seems to be a highlight of any trip. Believe me I know.
Cheers,

Thats what it's all about.... It's not all sunscreen, tan and a day on the water!
It's about the thrill, responsibility and knowledge of whwt you are doing, I lost my best crewy (Becky, daughter No1 ) who loved every minute on the water. Chatty, baited her own hooks, loved it. Daughter No 2 is happy having inherited my 1972 MK1 Escort.
Mate, grab what you can, while you can! They're gorgoeous, they're precious and they're all too soon gone. :(

Nice read Scalem - easy to understand those feelings when you are a Dad. My daughter is only 3 and I hope to have plenty of days like that with her in the future.

Absolute gold Scalem, that is lovely to see.
My son is only 6 and is kind of interested in fishing, I am about to inherit a small tinny from my dad, so I hope my boy will want to come out with me
My Dad is in the final stages of his fight with cancer, and has asked me to come visit for maybe a final fish off the beach.. I hope he is up to it, we used to hit the beach a lot when I was a kid.
Enjoy the times with your family, they are precious

I'm hearing you guys the joys of taking your children out fishing , Untangling lines baiting hooks, wiping up seasickness organising the fish that they have pulled into the boat at a great rate of knots which turns out to be a sea snake that sends everybody into a wild reckless fury in the boat as they clamber away from it screaming and yelling of coarse.
HAHHAHHAHAHAAH
Got to love it
I have 6 kids Hers Mine and Ours so a family outing is an experience in it's self. But yes they do love it and i'm always taking my dad out with me to repay him for all the knowledge he taught me over the years,
My oldest boy is 15 so i take him out alot at times for overnighters and day trips but i don't know if all kids are the same but with technology these days they all have somewhere to be and have to do something else sports and such.
But they all love the islands for a BBQ and swim and snorkle.

(and the sea snake incident did happen , it was something to see let me tell ya)

Hi Brian,
Just remember, a family that plays together stays together. You are doing a great job of the first part.
Good to see Kelly getting the feel of some bigger fish.

What a great read, when I was a nipper a large part of my childhood revolved around fishing with my Father and GrandFather. None of my other cousins really had an interest in going out on the river and honestly they don't know what they missed out on. Some of my best memories are from those trips. Having Dad and Grandpa showing us how to fish and telling stories around the fire at night.
Luckily for me my own little boy is a fishing nut, every weekend we go fishing ( When my Dad visits from out west he always tags along, very heart warming to see my little bloke fishing next to his Pop ). It's just our special time. I have a little two and a half year old girl at home as well, I wonder if she'll be keen when she get's a bit bigger.
Everyone always says, "make the most of it while you can. That's excactly what I'm doing, and loving every minute of it ".:)

Greg, the thing I am obviously frightened of is that my girls might have busy lives of their own when in their 20's. If they were blokes, I would not mind they were stealing my beer, so I consider you've done extreemly well!!

Dirtysanchez, when I wrote this post I thought twice about conveying a little emotion, but it had to be told. I think I made the right choice when there are obviously others like you who value family experiences fishing together. Sorry to hear you are close to that time your father moves on. I am sure my Dad is still fishing with me on occasions, I'd give anything to have had the chance to fish with him at the middle age I am now. Enjoy yourselves, and give him a hello from me, we lost our father to cancer too.

Ah yes, but Mickstar, I have met you and your better half on the water, and you seemed the perfect team, so enjoy it while you can. When did she last go out for a fish with you mate??? I hope it's often, because as Frankoo says above, if you play together you stay together.

Ah yes tangles seasickness mess and bordom when things are quiet. I have a 8,10 & 12 year old but you soon foget all that when you watch their faces as a fish takes line from them. Luckily i still have my father to help as excited kids bring in fish, rods, baits etc from all directions.Only trouble is now that he is retired he seems to get more fishing with my mates while i work
