I've just recently return from a trip to awoonga fishing with a few mates.
All up we ended up catching 12 barra and 2 jacks between the 6 of us, one jack was 50cm and the other
jack was 67cm,one of the bigest jack I've ever seen it looked like pupua new guinea bass
big and fat, this fish must be some kind of record for fresh water?

My mate Scotty caught the jacks trolling a barra classic at night time.

will post the pictures soon.

So how hard did this beast pull, comparable or better than a river/reef fish?.........Imagine one of these up around the metre!

My mate called it for a metre plus barra at first until it got to the surface and he seen it was a little bit short and fat to be a metre plus barra.

Go the Dog Bream!
Give it another 5-6 more years and I reckon the Barra will be taking a backseat at Awoonga to massive,Thumpin Jacks.I know I'd trade 10 metre+ Barra for 1 Jack that lenght :) .

Did the fish get eaten? Just wondering as jack are my favourite eating fish and for the most i cant stand fresh water fish. Would be great to know they chew just as good.

Cheers Chris

Worst luck we did keep the fish to eat and it tasted just like freshwater fish. Not worth eating, stick to eating the saltwater jacks.

Thanks mate good to hear for the future. I'd love to see those horse jacks released into the salt for breeding.

Awsome fish!! I've always been of the opinion that the stocking of juvenile jacks into such a large lake allready filled with millions of large hungry predators was largely a wasted exercise so it is great to see that some have made it to maturity. Imagine the atraction that would have been created by putting those few thousand jacks into a lake such Lake McDonald or Borumba or North Pine.
