WENT OUT LAST NIGHT WITH A MATE AND MY SON TO FISH THE SMALL REEF AROUND FROM THE WATER POLICE AT FISHERMAN ISLAND
ABOUT 2 HOURS FROM HIGH TIDE THE WATER WAS RUNNING AT A FAR PACE AND WE WERE BUSTED OFF ABOUT 4 TIMES NO BITE AS SUCH JUST WEIGHT ON THE LINE. AS SOON AS YOU STARTED TO WIND IN BIG WEIGHT AND THEN GONE.
ANY ANSWERS TO WHAT IT COULD BE ????
NIGHT WAS STILL GOOD CAME HOME WITH 3 ESTUARY COD SMALLEST BEING 400 LONG AND 4 GOOD SIZE SQUIRE

You should have had at least a tremble on the line if it was a shovelly or stingy as their mouths are underslung and as they would have to position themselves on the bait the likelihood is their snouts or wings would make contact with the line.
It's also not likely to be a big cod as these eat by sucking in water which simultaneously sucks in the bait. More likely, as has been said, a big wobby although large lizards are also notorious for just sitting with a bait in their mouth and not moving off.
This cod was caught just outside the river, and I don't doubt that there are bigger ones holed up in the wharves.

for something biting you off i would say large toadfish. in the range of 5 - 10kgs.
