Caloundra Poppering

Spent the last few days up at caloundra, and to say the least the fishing was poor. Despite this i managed one good session early monday morning. Armed with a river 2 sea bubble pop 65 i began to work the grass bank that lies next to the bridge at the entrance to the pelican waters canals. As soon as i got there the action was thick and fast. For about half an hour every 2nd or 3rd cast would result in a follow, smash, follow, smash without hooking up. Smaller trevally and queenies were smashing the little bubble pop left right and centre but just not hooking up. Great fun but! Ended up getting one fish to take the hooks, a reasonable little queenie of about 50cm or a touch more that put up quite a fight with a few ariel dsiplays and drag squeelings. As soon as the sun came over the horizon the action ceased as if a switch had just been turned off.
Tried the same spot using the same method at the saem time the following two days however the wind had picked up and this seemed to turn them right off the bite.
i couldn't even raise one little bream in the canals, tried a multitude of soft plastics ans small hard body's, they just wer'nt there at all. I put it down to the very brown colouration of the water and the fresh in the water.

Poppers are a great way to fish. So addictive.

awsome fish dude. just wondering if you had new hooks on ya popper, iv been up grading all my poppers with owner st36 stingers and my hook up rate has gorn through roof, just a small tip 4 ya. well done

When they are on they are on - can' beat the bloop of fresh poppers in the morning - at least you got one

Nice little queenie, also it may not have been the clarity of the water as i was up at Moolaba coloundra etc, a few weeks ago in the cyclone pretty much and scored some nice bream around those areas. What colour plastics were you using?

no i hadn't udpgraded them, what makes those ones beter but if i may ask? and what size dou think ill need for that size popper, i was thinking maybe smaller trebles would increase the hook up rate? thanks for the advice mate

i was using 3" pumkinseed minnows, 2" nuclear chicken shrimps, little ecogear grass minnows (dont know the colour), sx40 in gold coast gold and a bassday crystal sinking popper (for both the trevs and bream). No luck at all except for one half hearted grab at the sx40.

When i was up there i decided to try darker colours and the Colours were bloodworm and pumkindseed and watermelon, all in power minnows, could not raise a scale on either Gulps or Hb's even the new penny shrimp didn't get hit.

well as i said it was a river 2 sea bubble pop 65 so 65mm long ;) Not to sure about the colour but it was a blue/white one, picked it to look like a herring, seemed to work.

the owner st 36's are super sharp and seem strongenuff to handle most fish up to about 4kg. id recomend a size 10, for ya 65 bubble pop. good luck on getting some more. id try the smaller 45mm size aswell as they seem to get more hits 4 me and it seems to cast better that the 65mm

Good report mate. Have fished under that bridge plenty of times myself, is definitely hit or miss, but love it when it fires up.

yeh mate it can be pretty hit and miss, although most times i go there something usually turns up sometimes it just takes time. I've worked that entire stretch for a good hour before landing a queenie and a trev on consequetive casts, on a little 9 gram rook. But when they're on its hard to get the lure back without a strike.

For soem reason i find softies pretty unsuccessful here, smal hardbodies, metals and poppers seem to be what the fish will hit, never caught any speedsters there on plastics, just the one flattie that was sitting just off the drainage hole up towards the house on the right hand side.
