Just need a basic soft plastics rod (newby here), and dont want to spend a forture as the last 2pce was a 3 pce before too long :'(
Also, IM6, IM7 which is better and whats the difference?

ill say no, if u want a graphite rod, get a decent one, its unfortunately the way the market is, its very hard to get a decent graphite rod under 80 bucks. Look at a Berkley Dropshot or Shimano Raider. if these are out of the price bracket, the cheapest id go is a shimano backbone.
cheers

There almost cheap enough to take a punt on though more then likely they will probably be pretty ordinary. As land-lubber said the Berkley drop shot range can be picked up at a good price and are pretty good. I have a couple in my lineup and cant fault them.
Cheers Chris
Ive been useing a 7' drop shot for softies for the last 2 years, great stick for the price and wouldnt hesitate to buy another, also doesnt hurt as much as a loomis or similar if it does break
cheers

Splash,
I've got a Berkley BDS761 4-8kg spin. Its a nice rod to use when you don't have a fish on. When you have a fish on its a shocker - the butt has way too much flex. I wish i spent the money on something else.

Such as...(other rod preffered?)
Why do others love em so much then?

Got to remember hamish is after a basic bit of gear. IMO i think it is best to start off at the cheaper end. I started on a Raider, it served me well but have now worked up to a Loomis and Egrell. In saying that I fish up to 3 times a week, if you are only going to use the rod on the odd occ, go for a drop shot

I have the older BDS701M and have just purchased a Spin 700 to replace a phlueger triton I broke. The BDS701M has caught me a lot of fish everything from a 112cm threadfin salmon to some mid 60's snaps. It has plenty of grunt in the butt for a 4kg rod and is a pleasure to use. I have bought both my dropshots from BCF and last time i was there they also had some of the newer range. I have also seen some dropshot black series rod at the tackle wharehouse they seemed very nice though were about double the price of the normal dropshot range.

Hamish,
As others have said the berkley dropshot rods are a good place to start if you looking for 1-3kg, 2-4kg kinda range. Shimano also have some quite cheap graphite rods these days - i think some are around the $60 range.
Splash,
I would have rathered pay a little more and gotten a nitro 4-8kg distance spin . My mate has one and i have seen him land some great fish on it (Ambos, GTs, LTs, Snapper).
In general i don't mind the dropshot stuff- i have a 1-3kg stick that does a good job, but this tournament rod i got has been a bit dissapointing. The model you said is different to mine - but the line class / length are the same.
