Hey out there,
I have a limited budget and am looking at buying a mid-range 4x4 to take the family camping and fishing in. You know what I mean - cruising the beach looking for a good gutter, or doing a bit of off road camping - that sort of thing. I have looked around a bit and from what I can see, the best value for the $ I have looks to be the Triton dual cabs around the '96-'97 model. Can anyone offer any advise on these vehicles, what to look out for, inherent problems (if any - apart from the renowned turning circle that is). Any help on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/cheesy.gif

Hey.
Yeah we had a triton of about that era. It was a good car to drive and with some slightly wider tyres it did really well on the beach. however once the km's got up towards the 150 000km mark I started having a lot of trouble with A lot of the running gear on the front. I had problems with the hubs, oil leaks and A problem with the front transfer case. In saying that though it used to do a LOT of sand driving so maybe that had something to do with it.
Old tritons are renowned for being one of the worst 4x4 around

Hi Go Gecko, Once a vehicle is 10 years old you can expect problems ,its rarely you dont. A fourby that old would have at least 200 - 250,000klm on the clock , you would probably be inherating a heap of trouble.
A 4x4 that old is technically worth nothing , dealers cant give them away ( although some will try ) You would be better of spending more money on a later model with less clicks on the clock , instead of an old dunger that will give nothing but trouble.
Remember, you get what you pay for.

Hey.
I though I might also add that now I have a 2.8 rodeo that I have had since new and it has 200 000km on the clock. It is in a lot better condition overall than my triton was with that sort of mileage. The rodeo is still going strong and with a little maintenence drives like new whereas the triton had basically packed it in.

Hey Gecko, It would also be wise to get a diesel instead of petrol., Diesel powered cars are more reliable and are capable of doing ( in most instances ) twice the mileage before the engine needs rebuilding , which is important if your buying an older car with big miles.

Stay away from tritons they are very unreliable especially the older ones.

What a load of crap.
Mate, go for it.
Mines a 99 dualcab petrol, 280,000 on the clock and runs like a dream.
New bearings at 220 and clutch at 240 but you should expect that if you use them as they should be.
Not like some show pony "my d.... bigger than yours "job.
Straddie at least 6 times a year. Moreton every august for a week. No problems Although bigger tyres make a difference. Havent been to Fraser for 25 years because ,see end of 1st paragraph. Camping with the family anywhere.
Tows the 17fo0t Haines everywhere with no drama. Tin Can, Baffle and Turkey beach.
Find a decent one and it will do all you ask of it.
And a hell of a lot cheaper than the 'Show ponies".

Thanks guys, your comments give me a bit more to go on. I am all to well aware of getting what you pay for, so I will definately be looking hard at exactly what there is on offer out there. Thanks again
