How not to park

I had my 73 year old Dad in the car when I did this on Moreton Island earlier this week. The only thing that stop us from rolling over is the sand pile at the passenger door. I was just a tad to close to the edge and the bank just went out from under me :)

why ?

I'm just back from straddie for 48hrs;

The rules of your permit say stay off the dunes and the vegetation - there are moves afoot at the moment on north straddie to have 4wd banned from main beach (and possibly flinders) - the guys behind it are some of the long term locals who are sick of the destruction - if straddie falls then moreton will certainly follow - sorry guys - maybe the thread should read "How not to drive as a responsible adult...."

I mean honestly - during a time of increased erosion !

I'm heading to Moreton in Feb. Is there a lot of coffee rock exposed (as per the photo) now? I hope it isn't too hard to get up and down the beach.

Also I really hope these beaches aren't closed to vehicles. It would be a huge shame and closing down even one will increase the load on the others - also therefore increasing the chance the others will eventually close.

I might be wrong but those pics look like you were driving on the dune and not the beach. That 4wd in front of you in the last pic is definitly driving on the dune. Why do this?

Same thing happened to me on the fresh water track when i pulled off to the side to let an on coming 4x4 past. The sand bank collaped and i nearly rolled it. Had to hook a chain upto the front bullbar and 1 to the top of the rollbar to stop it rolling and chain it to a tree. Then 2wd and punch it so the arse end ended up down the hill and then lockers on and out i came. Was close though.

C'mon guys give Bungie a break.
The section of beach where this happened is just north of camel rock, it's notorious for being washed out. Like the track at Nkgala rocks at Fraser you drive up to the dune and along the track behind the exposed coffee rock. The only difference here is that you don't need to use it unless the beach is washed out after some heavy seas, like now. Over there in September I saw the ranger do exactly the same thing.

Pffft do gooder's. Who reads those reports. If you need to get past then that looks like the only way to me. Maybe just dont drive so close to the edge next time.

Everybody has to go ABOVE the coffee rock exposed just north of White Rock. Ambo's and the rangers have to use it as well, as they did this morning. The coffee rock were the photos are taken is exposed right down to below the low tide mark, and over three feet in the air. The rock is exposed right down to the tree trunks that were caught in it during the eruption (I’m lead to believe the rock is volcanic).
My camp is 2k's south of middle road, the beach has been eaten out by the low last week, seems like about 3 feet off the top before we got here, and since I have been here a further foot has come off the top. I have coffee rock out the front of my camp, as I said I'm only just south from middle road.
And believe it or not, after warning somebody this afternoon about the danger, I had to go back and get the Lux so we could winch him back up the edge.
With the wind blowing the tide up the beach, 3, yes three hours, either side of the top of the tide I am locked in my camp. But that all part of the fun of camping J
Will put more images up once I get back home on Sunday to show what I mean.

;) your right chisel. Wasnt directed at anyone. I dont think anyone will purposely distroy the dunes. Or anything for that matter. But sometimes when your 4x4ing you just have to do what you have to do. And there is always some do gooder there to read you the rules and say "ahhh, your being naughty, im telling" I HATE those kinds of people. They are usually the people who are bogged and i just drive straight past. :). We all know speeding is bad too, but sometime we all have to do it. So i dont think anyone should be judging bungie or anyone else. Each to their own, just dont tell others what to do!!

This is the rock formation that was bypassed. As you can see it goes off into the sunset. This is just north of Camel/white rock.

Then the next few are most of the rocks coming out of the beach between the above shot and 2 clicks south of middle road. A lot of sand has come off the beach :'(

This one, we got on the island on the 6th, the sand was at the level 2 foot under my mums feet, by the 10th we had lost another foot off the beach :(
