With a slight break in the weather yesterday, thought it would be a good chance to try my new X-mas pressies.

Hit Wello ramp at 5am and was greeted by 15 - 20knots of solid NEer. My plans of chasing mackeral in the eastern bay soon changed and we opted to stay local. At the first spot, just off king island (guided by the new GPS 72) after pounding through the messy slop. Set up a nice drift across some promising looking grounds (how easy is it to work out good drift patterns with a gps:D:D) but after only 4 drifts every man and his dog was parking right in the middle of our drift line:-/. Anchored up over an area that looked good but nothing around and i was keen to make the most of the early morning so left the car park to find somewhere to our selves.

Headed to some ground around Green that has always produced fish and locked in some new points to the GPS as the fish started coming aboard. My deckie was soaking bait::):P and i was chucking a variety of 4 and 5' plastics. The stinky stuff got off to a flying start with 2 little venus tusk fish just over 30cm a piece from straight under the boat in only 6m. :oNever caught them before and was especially surprised to see them at Green. Over the next few hours we pulled in quite a few small squire, grinners and a nice flattie (55cm) and i had quite a few good hits and short runs but the hooks weren't setting:-/ until it went quite at about 9.30.

The wind had dropped off a bit so we decided to go for a look around and found some promising looking ground in between Green and St helena with heaps of bait around. There was plenty of bait soakers anchored up and i couldn't see any other plastic chuckers around. We peppered the area with bait and plastics and marked a few new spots but only boated one more fish, a 30cm sweetlip.

With sun getting hot and the fish seemingly off the chew we pulled the pin and where back at the ramp by 11.30.

A quite day overall and didn't really get the chance to properly test the limits of new sol 3000 and rod combo but happy to christen it with a nice little flattie and other bits and pieces.

The GPS is gonna change the way i fish big time, its a must for drift fishing. Love it.;D

Hi PLAXTIX!

It's amazing what the GPS does for you and you wonder how you ever did without one! I've got the same one as you and it's helped in a number of ways in the 6 months i've had it! Just a word of caution, it chews and spits out batteries like there's no tomorrow especially at night when you have the background lit so it's handy to carry a spare set with you at all times...

That bait between ST H & Green has been there for the past 6 weeks but you wouldn't know it by the number of fish coming from there - need some big un's to ball them up for us.

Take Care T

G'day

Nice report there,

Tip on the GPS... I have a magellan handheld... and as T said, batteries will not last long @ all.

Bes thing I did was wire in a cigarette lighter plug in the boat and now run it from there, never ever ever will run out of power for it now :)

Good report mate, St Hel fishes well in Winter. We have had a few good sessions there knocking off the Squire, that was when I was soaking bait so no reason why plastics wont do a little better

Plaztix,

I went to my fav spot off Green with Poodroo in his new boat.... without a GPS and tried to line up markers with buildings like the old days. What a waste of time!! Even in the bay you would wonder about the value of a GPS, but when I went straight to my spot again Yesterday we found fish instantly - until a big cruisecraft arrived and did about 4 or 5 figure 8's, obviously trying to sound for some structure. That made the school of snapper move on, but not before Poodroo pulled a 44cm out of the school. If you are using SP's for snaps in the bay you won't know yourself. Arrive and cut the motor straight away without spooking the fish, has to be a clear winner.

Looks like it was a bit quiet for every one yesterday, no matter sounds like the little stuff kept you entertained.

Cheers Chris

Yeah, got a 10 pack of AA's that will stay in the boat.;) Planning on eventually getting a cigarette lighter connection.

Have had great days at Green and St Helena on plastics in the past (and years ago on bait) but never seen so much bait. Even when a mate and i bagged out on 60cm snaps and left them biting (in august or septemeber i think) , there was no where near as much bait then. Was surprised not to pull something from amongst it all yesterday.:-/

I was a bit gutted that the Father in law (bait fisho, who i'm slowly converting), got onto those 2 tusk fish straight after i told him he should chuck the bait in as burley and give the plastics another shot cause all you catch on bait is undersized vermin.::) They were small but still the fish of the day considering where they came from.

Cheers Silent, i wasn't sure exactly what type of tuskies they were, but knew they would be good on the tooth.

No surface action at all and mate, i was on the look out, i promise.;)

Was keen as to get a good bend in the new advantage rod and hear the sol screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeam:P

It was pretty blowy and every now and then one of the white caps would look like a fish breaking the surface. but it was only my imagination::)

From what i hear sounds like the speedsters still haven't showed, would have thought that yesterday would have produced a few for someone.

Good on ya for having a crack. GPS is great for plastics fishing and setting up drift lines. I too put the ciggie lighter in the boat and no flat batteries in the gps anymore(also have a 72). Looks like webby found a few speedsters. Ben
