With a slight break in the weather yesterday, thought it would be a good chance to try my new X-mas pressies.
Hit Wello ramp at 5am and was greeted by 15 - 20knots of solid NEer. My plans of chasing mackeral in the eastern bay soon changed and we opted to stay local. At the first spot, just off king island (guided by the new GPS 72) after pounding through the messy slop. Set up a nice drift across some promising looking grounds (how easy is it to work out good drift patterns with a gps:D:D) but after only 4 drifts every man and his dog was parking right in the middle of our drift line:-/. Anchored up over an area that looked good but nothing around and i was keen to make the most of the early morning so left the car park to find somewhere to our selves.
Headed to some ground around Green that has always produced fish and locked in some new points to the GPS as the fish started coming aboard. My deckie was soaking bait::):P and i was chucking a variety of 4 and 5' plastics. The stinky stuff got off to a flying start with 2 little venus tusk fish just over 30cm a piece from straight under the boat in only 6m. :oNever caught them before and was especially surprised to see them at Green. Over the next few hours we pulled in quite a few small squire, grinners and a nice flattie (55cm) and i had quite a few good hits and short runs but the hooks weren't setting:-/ until it went quite at about 9.30.
The wind had dropped off a bit so we decided to go for a look around and found some promising looking ground in between Green and St helena with heaps of bait around. There was plenty of bait soakers anchored up and i couldn't see any other plastic chuckers around. We peppered the area with bait and plastics and marked a few new spots but only boated one more fish, a 30cm sweetlip.
With sun getting hot and the fish seemingly off the chew we pulled the pin and where back at the ramp by 11.30.
A quite day overall and didn't really get the chance to properly test the limits of new sol 3000 and rod combo but happy to christen it with a nice little flattie and other bits and pieces.
The GPS is gonna change the way i fish big time, its a must for drift fishing. Love it.;D
