Decided to make a trip to Barron River yesterday and with the tide peaking at 7:30am I thought that with next to no wind it would have been a good opportunity to see what was around.
When the idea of the trip was floated; the Barbie wanted to come along so we decided that I would wake her at 5:00am and then we would leave by 5:30 to be in the water by 6:00am at the latest.
That was the idea anyway; getting her out of bed at 5:00am is a task not tob e taken lightly as I was about to find out. Despite shaking her, pouring some water on her neck, and hitting her on the head with a pillow, she wasn't getting up for anyone and I decided to make it a solo trip. Guess that there is just no way that a 15 year old girl can look pretty at 5:00am ... ;D
Anyway, I managed to be in the water by about 5 to 6 and took off up the river to an old trawler wreck not too far from Redden Creek where I had got a nice grunter on a previous trip. I got two nice hits there but had the rod in the holder rigging the second rod both times; I guess that some days luck just doesn't smile on you...
I baited up a few more times and managed to get a small bream and one slightly larger grunter, that was the end of the action here; both fish were released to get bigger.
From here I decided that I would try near the airport boat ramp; there were lots of bait jumping obviously trying to get away from something chasing it. I threw out a line towards the airport bank side and another into the river; soon the line on the river side got some action and I was baited, no action on the bank side though.
I got baited twice more on the river line, but then I was holding the rod and got a couple good tugs on the line and struck. The fish took off peeling about 5metres of line before turning; as soon as he saw the boat, he took off again taking another two metres. I got him back to the boat and saw the end of his tail briefly before he decided to go under the boat then back out again. From the brief look at the tail I thought that it might be a nice Trevally but eventually I brought in a catfish which from the weight on the line was about 4 - 5kg. They might be vermin but he put up a good fight all the same! 8-)
All of a sudden the rod on the bank side got some attention and about 30 seconds later I pulled in another small bream. A couple of minutes later the re-baited rod on the river side got some action again. After two more baits, a small grunter came aboard and was promptly released to grow bigger.
Threw out again and the rod on the river side again went off.
After about 30 seconds, a medium sized toad came to the boat snapping his two big teeth. Think that I am going end up taking KingTin's title of Verminator at this rate. :-/
That was the end of the action at this stage and I then tried various spots all along the river from the mouth to the junction of Thomatis Creek with no luck.
All fish were released and the Bream that is in the photo was also returned to the water and swam off at a brisk rate of knots so despite all the blood, he was ok.
By 11:00am I called it a day went home to clean up the boat and mow the yard.
