Hi all,

I am new here but thought i'd do my first post. Got up this morn at the crack of dawn (3:00 am) and headed to my Dad's place. We had prepared the boat the night before for some crabbing and fishing (only had the boat 2 months, 4.75m Bluefin) so that we could take off as soon as I got there. Launched from the fisherman island's boat ramp at around 4:30 am and dropped the pots out to the left of the beacons then headed over to green to check out the north eastern tip that everyone raves about. We weren't really sure where to go so headed in from the red beacon to about 4m or so of water. Anchored up and started fishing. Caught a few undersized reefies (grassy sweet, tuskfish and squire) must have been about 15 or so undersized squire which was giving me the shits. After a couple of hours or so we decided to give saint helena a go. Anchored on the eastern reef and same story with a million undersized squire. However we did manage to pull 3 keepers which is nice. When it hit about 10am we decided to go pick up the pots and ended up with 5 sandies. All in all was a nice day with great weather.

With green island I think we made the mistake of going in to far, is it true if you head directly east from the red beacon and anchor say 30 or so metres from it you can get some nice results? Mainly what i want to do is try and avoid all the tiddlers, it was getting beyond the joke. Any idea what the depth is in this area?

I'm thinking of heading out tomorrow morning again, this time with a friend of mine, probably try the spot due east of the red beacon, or maybe I should try the eastern side of green? Any help would be much appreciated.

Another thing im finding very hard is converting to the sot plastics. Bait Just seems so much easier and more likely to achieve a good result. I'm only 24 though, so I have alot to learn.

Thanks, Scott. (Damn this fishing bug :D I cant stop)

Mate I know what you mean, fishing is addictive, I gave up smoking but could never give up fishing?? Some would be great full of a squire at all, let alone the amount it sounded like you were into, always good to get a feed though!! I’m still a rookie my self so and have only just started getting out there my self, so all I can say is keep looking you will find them, at least you will be having fun while you search!!

on the south eastern corner there is a boulder wall exposed at low tide, there is a series of drop offs that on there day fish well.
Also troll the length of the rock wall with diving lures, make sure the lures only dive to a depth of about 2.5-3m or it will get costly. There is some nice Greasy Cod to be caught, also trev occasionally. I have also caught School Macs on floated pillies. Try 27 23 232 S 153 14 726 E..caught Squire on Plastics and lightly weighted Mullet Fillet
Dont worry about the fishing bug, its the Soft Plastic bug that is more contagious

Cheers Gazza,

Getting our Garmin 525s combo plotter/sounder next week with the g2 charts. should make a huge difference on where we choose to fish as our current one is pretty crud (just an old sounder.) Hrmm maybe tomorrow im better off heading to Mud. Arghh crap my mate just rang me and he cant go anymore, oh well.

Scott.

Thanks heaps Stabin, will give that a go when i get the gps. Im not much for pelagics, although its probably just a case of me never having tried for them. I imagine its alot of fun.

Cheers, Scott

Scruhland if theres little ones there the mamas and pappas will be deeper off original marks, with the right current why not give driffting a go just remember to cast ahead of the drift and have a couple of placcys bouncing along behind pref in different colours and types.Green does fire with reefies and palagics and st helena for nohas.ood luck

I'm thinking of heading out to green again tonight to fish the deeper waters(didn't go out this morn) launching at around 4:30pm or so. NE 15 knot winds is the predicticion with the storm passing over now. Anyone recon its not safe? I could just settle for fishing along the inside of fisherman island. It'll just be me and my younger bro. First night trip in the boat.

IMO I dont recomend going out at night if you dont know the area. Thunder storms and fishing rods dont mix either. Also 15 Knots from the North at St Hel would be pretty lumpy. A few years ago I did the same thing in the same area you want to fish, didnt know the boat passage area that well. Spent 6 hours on a sand bank waiting for the tide to come back in. This is a pic of my old boat high and dry, middle of winter, didnt get home untill about 11 at night. I learn quickly from my mistakes

So i ended up going out again last night :D was to good to resist. Hit Green at about 5:30pm with my bro and his mate. They fired off the bat with the fish in the second pic being caught within 30 mins. Then the mozzies set in and as there was no wind it was terrible. After 10 mins of this we had to go, shortest fish ever :D. The first pic is of the saturday catch. Going out at night makes me realise how useful the gps is going to be. Cheers guys.
