Just before xmas I brought a new rod and reel from a large retailer,no names as I am not sure who is not playing the game.
It cost $810.00 and was about $200.00 cheaper than most other stores.
When I asked for the box the reel came in I was told that it was not available with combos.
I tried to explain that there would be weights to adjust the reel in the box and I would like the exploded views of the reel for services it made no difference.
Is this the retailer or the manufacturer?

I've never seen a combo reel come with a box but then again not many combos are that expensive. They usually have some sort of packaging though and i would have thought that there should be some paperwork for sure.

How did the warranty paperwork etc. come?

its the retailer because they put the combo's together

If the retailer puts the combos together in store, then wouldnt the reel be in a box maybe when the retailer bought it?

Retailer for sure.
I've seen the local putting combos together here.
Every reel comes out of a box.
Also, they would not import them as a combo with reel attached.

Cheers Jeff.

Would have been a box for sure. Shop has just throw it away when they put the combo together so the didnt have to store it. A little sloppy on there behalf because this isnt a little toy combo you have bought. Guys that appreciate good gear usually want all the details and look after their stuff.
I would get up them again, even if you get them to put another 'combo' together for the shelf and let you have that box.

I bought both my botom bashers s combo's and they both came with boxes and rod sheaths.
I'd say with the bigger stores they wouldn't care to much to keep them saying they'd sell so many.
I did buy a chear combo for my son with a overhead and 15 kg rod set up and yes it didn't come with box or instructions ( i didn't ask either) from BCF thats was an okuma

I just bought 3 combo's from BCF, but all came with boxes and instructions. Though it was a combo all items were off the shelf separately.

I think what happens in most circumstances when buying combo's, they are there on the shelf to be picked up and ready to go. 9/10 people probably don't care about the box so they toss it.

i don't think you could really blame anyone for not getting the box and paperwork that comes with it, i'm sure most of this is on the net. Just hold onto your receipt.

MISTREATED !!!!! ...... Shafted more like it>:( Pretty poor effort from the retailer IMO ( Lazy is probably the answer) ..... 800 big ones is a fair lump of Combo! ... so you are not looking at a little toy outfit...... So there must have been a box for the reel

PS .... might be worth talking to the distributor ( Shimano, Daiwa etc) & get some assistance from them ...... I'm sure they will come to the party in lieu of the retailers poor performance.

I had the similar problem in the U.K.

I purchased a Tibor QC Gulfstream fly reel (not cheap) over the internet and as part of the shops service they offered me free backing and fly line for purchasing the reel. Backing £30/fly line £70, I thought great! On receiving the reel in Paris there was no box/paperwork/warranty/ free nameplate card. Needless to say I called/emailed the shop and they said that as the reel had been opened and loaded it was not there duty to re-pack the box. More excuses followed before I finally gave up. I called Tibor but they obviously said it was not there problem either.

The moral of the story is - If you are going to fork out a lot of money for gear, make sure you have everything you are paying for before you part with your money. It becomes a lot harder to negotiate once you have paid.

What was the combo? When you say combo does that mean you purchased a rod and reel at the same time or as a specific package already set up ready to rock and roll on the shelf. yeh sure if its a 50 dollar combo that comes like that from the supplier then they don't have a box even they have a warrenty card and exploded view come banded on the hindgrip. but for what you paid i'd expect the full works to come with it.

jeff is right mate def the retailers fault. most of your cheaper combos dont come with boxes but that combo for that price what ever it was would of come in a box. rod separate then put together at the combo price. what was the reel mate

ok, it is not nesicarially the case that the combo is put together in the store, sometimes they come pre done from the supplier (mostly cheap ones, but the odd expencive combo as well). and it is true that 99%of the time the customer doesnt ask for the box, even with exp combos. HOWEVER the box should have been kept for something of that value if it was avaliable. I personally keep all the boxes for combos over $100 as a general rule of thumb, as to whether weekend staff do wat they are ment to is another matter :) .
