Hi all, took my 14 year old down to iluka for a weeks fishing from boxing day, weather was good for just 1 day and then turned nasty, but what a fantastic spot to fish, the rock walls , sandflats and channells are amazing, and how big is that river? at some places i guessed it to be over 800 metres wide, there must be some monster bream flathead and whiting in the mighty clarence, anyway back to fishing, on the second morning i managed 15 flathead by casting up against the rock walls, most were under 50 cm but best 2 were 65 cm, did get 2 whiting 35cm on a 4 inch gulp, i was amazed that the legal limit on whiting is 27cm which seemed generous to the fish but was saddened by the amount of pictures around the pubs and baitshops of huge flathead 80cm plus that were legally killed, you can take 1 fish per day over 70 cm which to me is insane, and you can take 10 flathead per person per day, anyway the weather was dreadfull, huge seas and rain, went down to south west rocks to visit some rellies and loved it there as well, heres hoping for a good 2008 fish wise.
Oh santa brought me a new stradic 1000 with a shimano bream finnesse and 2kg fireline, the reel is so sweet, not sure on the rod yet.

Hey Alleycat,
pity about the weather, nice effort under the conditions.
Thinking of heading down with the family to Iluka / Yamba this year to have a look around. Can you recommend any accomodation down there?

Cheers
John

Hi john , your wife would rather yamba, more shops clubs beaches ect, its only accross the river from iluka but it takes 30 minutes to drive around, i stayed in river gardens caravan park at 4 charles st, its on the river and under 1klm from the ramp, if you go in holiday time you will pay heaps but otherwise you will have a ball, may- june is the time for big jew, bream and tailor.

Iluka is an awesome place.

Home to some monster Jew,tailor, bream and whiting.
The walls offer great land based fishing for tuna and mackeral in season too.

Hi silent, mate that would be pushing it, i bought the outfit for light fishing but the drag on the stradic is excellent so it might just handle a big snap.;D

Some nice fish there mate. The weather is still ripping it up. I live just out of maclean so im basically 10-15 mins drive to yamba, iluka, brooms, angourie etc. Its a top spot because i have each of the different locations and species available.
I find working the edges of the rock walls tends to find the larger fish right on the edge with the smaller school sized fish further out. Almost like a pecking order.
