Hi all at Hervey Bay, I've noticed a lot of boats, not just tinnies but quite large craft including passenger ferries, travel between Urangan Harbour and the main channel south of Woody Island via the shallow and unmarked western side of Woody Island. Does anyone have passage details, GPS waypoints and draft requirements for tide height, or other relevant information.
I have a sailing catamaran, and can reduce draft to 0.8 meters when motoring.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Marlin Mike and Seamaid.
Unfortunately the passage west side of Woody is not the official passage and is not shown in Beacon to Beacon or the charts. As such VMR will not provide the waypoints. Probably a liability issue.

King Kong,
That 'passage' shows drying sands at low tide in one area and also has a go slow area, not a problem in a sailing cat, but to be considered. Go out from the marina to the island then down off it til you get to the bottom, just not at low tide, and you should be right. A GPS chartplotter and sounder makes boating easier.
Just got back from Hervey Bay, didn't get the boat out though, tad windy.

Hi Kingkong
yeah your right about giving out way points could be tricky.
I am a local Hervey Bay fisho i pass through this area approx once a week in a 4.55 tinny when its not cyclonic ah.
mate, i got a garmin GPS 172 c (colour) with a blue chart chip, displays all the
features of this area,it may be not accurte but dose the job.
this is what we do, you may at your own risk.
Out from Urangan harbour we pass 100m south of Round Is head & veer to the middle of BigWoody IS & and hug the island to South Point this i advise 1/2 tide up check tide heights
recommend chart-- GREAT SANDY STRAIT ( NORTH ) BOAT SAFTY CHART.
You will need this chart to continue on
best of boating
Seamaid:)
