In case the title doesn't make sense, I headed out to Maggie Island this morning to try and get a feed for the BBQ tonight.

Launched at 3am from Ross creek, parked the car, jumped in the boat only to jump into ankle deep water, wtf?? Oh shit, forgot the bungs. Tie the boat off, back the trailer down the ramp and retreive the boat (bloody heavy btw). Sit and wait for 20 minutes until the water drains, plugs in and re-launch the boat::). Still dark so I switch the nav lights on, no lights, man is this going to be a tough day, anchor up to find the problem, no worries, just a loose fuse, so now I'm right to go (finally).

Conditions were glass like, scooting across the water @ 30knt (top speed for me). Anchored up at first spot, just west of picnic bay, burleyed and rigged up, on goes a squid. Nothng for 1/2 hr, same bait, so I decided to chuck a pilly on (yellow zone so only 1 rod allowed). As soon as it hits the water I'm on for a screaming run, definately a good fish, thumbed spool to try and stop it but as soon as more tension was put on the line, reefed, damn, this is starting to be a repeat of last time I was here. So after rerigging about 4 times due to bustoffs and brickings, i decided these fish were best left alone, the sun was beginning to rise, so I thought I'd find somewhere a little deeper, hopefully to entice a trout.

2nd spot at 4.5m deep on middle reef, anchor up, burley, out goes a squid. big hit annnnddd reefed, shit How unlucky can I be? Took tension off the line, hopefully he'll get himself out. After a short wait, he goes off on a screaming run, got you this time buddy, with 20lb braid and 40lb leader I was feeling pretty confident in my gear, so I let him have it, a short time later a nice red throat of 39cm in on board an in the kill bucket. Action went quiet from there, with only a few small cod and stirpeys being boated.

Chucked the bled red throat on ice, and what do I do? tip the bloody water over the side, for the next half hour I'm battling 3-4ft reef sharks, they were taking both squid and pillies, I couldn't get away from them. I finally hook up on what feels like a good fish, which turned out to be a grassy of about 40cm est, when a dirty great tiger shark decided he wanted it more than me. And of course I get hooked up on him. I estimated him to be around 10ft, as he was more than half the length of my boat (16ft). So I played him for a bit to try and get as much line back as I could, when he turns and steams straight towards the boat, and under, with no time to lower my rod, the sudden shock, broke my new 6-8kg berkley dropshot BC, well so much for that Christmas present, it now lays in 3 peices. and to really piss me off, the tiger decides to just bite through the line, why couldn't he have done that BEFORE he broke my rod?

Now with the shits, I move to another spot and use the backup rod, only to be pestered by pickers, with the odd good run and bricking. After getting tired of rerigging and the pickers I moved one last time, over towards picnic bay again. With the tide going out, water depth was about 2.5m. Starting to feel the heat of the day coming through, and nearly ready to head for home, I spot a BIG GT hovering across the reef, with no lures on board, I tried to tempt him with squid and pillies, but the most interest he showed was sniff and off he went. With the heart pumping, and ready to spend all day on the water for another chance with that GT. Baited up with squid and sent it out, with a hand full or cubed pillies to generate some interest. All of a sudden BANG, my backup rod nearly snaps in 2 and I'm on. definately a good fish, ducking and diving all over the place for cover, peeling line off the reel, I'm think big jack, c'mon big jack. But no, after a 5min battle, up comes a Trout, Hooray, even better. In the net, for a quick measure, and he goes 45cm, into the kill bucket with you mister. In 2.5m I reckon trout shit all over a jack for fight, and also eating too, which is a bonus.

Heart's racing again, adrenalin pumping, time for another of those if you please, oh wise fishing gods. Out goes another squid, only to be taken by small sharks again, with a couple more small cod and stripey's in between. Getting tired of sharks I decide to head for home at 10am. Still glassy conditions and only a veeerrry light breeze, just to take out a little bit of heat. So with 2 fish in the esky, I hook it home, hitching a ride on one of the Maggie Ferries wake, boosting me up to 35knts.

Definately a good day on the water for me, especially considering I have only ever fished that area once, a couple weeks ago with nonibbles.

No piccies as of yet, The camera batteries are charging, and I didn't take it out on the water today. Stay tuned for pics to be added soon.

Cheers

Good read. Well done with the 2 you have for the BBQ. maybe the spare rod should have a reel loaded up with 40lb Baid and 60lb leader or those buggers that brick you.

Bring on the new year and may all your bait get smashed everytime you go fishing

good read and well done on the fish, pity you had no poppers and a heavy set up for the GT.would have been fun on light stuff for a short time anyway.

next time you fish that spot you keep getting bricked in try using a 50lb mono handline...see how you go then...oh and an 8/o hook.....thats a tip from an ex pro reef fisherman.
2 for the bbq is heeps better than ZIP.
GOOD READ MATE.

yep it sounds like a nice day out.
and pickers is on the money with his advice. When fishing the reef up the size of your tackle and you will up the size of the fish landed.
Use the light tackle for fishing for pelagics.

2 fish are better than none.
Good to see someone getting out with some decent conditions.
Sounds as if you had a bit of fun with the men in grey suits.

had a lot of fun anyway, those bricking sure kept me entertained between fish, there was a couple that I got right to the boat, but they just swam straight to the bottom from there. Forgot to mention, all the baits I used had no weight, I just let the bait drift in the current (very little current as well) on 2 snelled 5/0 circle hooks. I do have a 50lb reef rod, but I wasn't expecting to encounter fish that good. I tried upsizing my leader, but when I did the fish weren't interested. Surprisingly the water wasn't that dirty, especially after all the rain we've just had, next time I will try my luck with a heavier, flouro leader. I did have a heavier setup (30lb braid), but for some reason, the reel wouldn't click into free spool, so I couldn't cast, will have a look at that tomorrow, and get it ready for next time. Forgot the mention that there were plenty or macks around, including spanish, in my burley trail, but they weren't interested in any of my offerings. I did manage to find 1 lure in the boat, so I tried trolling around where they were feeding, but nothing, then I went over a really shallow bommie, and got the lure good and stuck on the bottom.

No pics anymore, while the batteries were charging, I had a kip, buy the time I woke up, the fish were filleted and cooked so I never got a chance. Never mind next time....and hopefully there will be more fish, as I will use heavier gear.

at times we use to use no lead and just float our pillies just in front of the reef edge witch worked a treat for trout as they feed better on the RUN ON side of the reef....meaning fishing the side of the reef that the tide is running onto and not off and it was easy to see witch side the run was running onto as there is a smooth patch of water in front of it due to the water rising up instead of along the reef edge.
if you want any more tips mate I'm more than happy to share them with you.

sounds like a good trip mate. Those sharks just confirm your fear of spearing up here hey?

Pickers, yeah I was fishing the lee side of the reefs, which is probably why I only encountered 1 trout on your info. But the trout I did catch was sitting in front of a huge bommie that came within 0.5m of the surface, which would prove you right in this case. This was the first 'reef' trip I've done on my own up here, so any info on the good oil would be much appreciated.

Dan, the water looked awful tempting when the heat started to kick in, but images of that shark kept me well clear. I guess thats one disadvantage of fishing up here, when it gets too hot, you can't just jump over the side to cool off either something is gonna eat you, or you get stung by those irukanji (spelling). Which is why I think life jackets are pointless up here:P, it just makes you an easy target, I'd rather drown than get torn apart by what lurks beneath::).

Great read Scott,

I might be trying a similar thing tonight or tomorrow. The 80lb handline will be coming along for the ride....

I'm keen on heading out again, if you've got a spare seat, I still owe you some fuel.

I don't have a handline, so I'll bring along the 50lg outfit, don't know how I'll go casting........

Hey Scott,
Happy New Year and good read.
I've learnt a little more about that area since we went last. Thank you.
A mate of a mate (gun chopper fisherman) also told me that in shallow water (<5m) particularly, you need to start with your squid light on the bottom and gradually raise it as the school begins to build (remember you are creating a mini eco system - first the plankton/fry, then the smallfish, then squid and bigger fish). If on the surface, it casts too many shadows and your boat will actually either keep the squid hiding just under the boat or out of reach.
Good to see ya got out though. I took James to the lakes for a bit of lure casting lessons and to get some small mullet for the pet barra.

P.S. Check with your tackle shop about a warranty claim on your dropshot. When mine broke, there was an unconditional replacement warranty. It took about 4 months but I eventually got a brand new rod (same) - let the tackle shop do the work but keep on to them so they don't "forget" to follow it through (like that happens in Townsville? :-X )

Yeah already took it back, they're getting the Berkley rep to look at it, should hear from them tomorrow.

***Update**** got a call from the Berkley rep today, they are replacing the rod, so looks like it was an even better fishing trip now!!;D
