Rover Park 2007
Brooke and I headed to Rover Park 4 x 4 and camping property located about 35 kilometers east of Tenterfield on the Bruxner Highway in NSW.
The park is run by Heidi and Hans and are two of the most friendly park operators you will ever meet. Nothing is too much trouble and the park itself is always clean and all amenities working.
The park consists of 4 x 4 driving on Easy, Medium and Extreme tracks. The Easy tracks are fine but some of the Medium tracks require due care and deflated ( 18 -20 psi ) tyres to make the going better. I actually deflate tyres once I hit the dirt turning off the Bruxner as the dirt roads are littered with rocks and stones. The Extreme tracks are negotiable for a 4 x 4 with LSD’s at least, but clearance is important. The park now caters for motorbikes, although they have a separate area to ride and camp.
The camp grounds are flat and grassey with fireplaces abundant. The main camp ground is where we pitched our tent as it was close to the farmyard, playground and amenities. Other accommodation is Bunkhouse, onsite caravans and huts and can all be accessed by 2WD. The new waterslide was a hit with all kids and the flying fox operates when there is enough interest from potential flyers !! One must collect ones own firewood and that is not a problem. One suggestion is to bring a chain saw, but it is not necessary.
You will be handed a map of the tracks on arrival and I will explain these a little. Some of the best sights are Bush Beach on Rapids Drive and the river bend at the end of Panorama Drive, Sitting Rock, the creek and waterfalls at Suzee Canyon and the Gold Mine ( which is not signed and hard to locate ). The map is not to scale but with a little imagination it does the job. Platypus Drive, Fenceline Drive , Olys Way and Bellbird Circuit / No Worries Way are a must for the experienced 4 x 4’er and will certainly test the vehicle without damage. The tracks are well defined and clear of lantana and scratchy tree limbs. Merv’s Hill will test the extreme guys with it’s loose rocks and steepness but the extreme tracks behind the main camp are tame ( for extreme guys, but certainly doable in most 4 x 4’s with LSD or lockers ).
This park is a must for the Family orientated 4 x 4’er. Plenty of flat ground to ride the pushy, mini bikes, dams for canoes and fishing, farm with Donkey’s, goats, rabbits, ginea pigs, birds, ducks and more. There is also horse riding, when the EI is gone.
I traveled to the park from Brisbane via Beaudesert, Rathdowney, Woodenbong, Tabulum and Drake and on the return trip went via Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Warwick and skirted Ipswich. It took longer on the return trip but better roads, great countryside and historical towns.
For more info just email the park.
