G'day everyone !

I'm pretty new to the fishing game and really wanted to start having a go at sp's.
For Chrissy , the missus bought me a Shimano T curve rod ( 2-5kg line) and a slade 2500FB reel to go with it.
I went down to BCF and the guy got me to buy FINS 10 lb braid-4mono dia. (yellow) and surecatch fluoro carbon 10lbs - 0.27mm for leader.
Also picked up gulp! 2 "nuc.chicken and 3" pumpkinseed shaky shads for bream and flatties. ( 1/6 and 1/12 jig heads as well ).

Too rough for the boat :'( so i had a flick around underneath the fisherman island bridge and the boat ramp but didnt get a nibble.Maybe too rough :-/

My question is this !

Is this a good setup to start out with and did I get the right braid ?
Any other advice would be welcome !
As i said , no bites but still a lot of fun !:D

your rig is pretty good.

i don't know about the leader though i use seagur. i normally run a 1/8th oz jig head then go up or down from there.

try and get onto the video from berkely with adam router as the host. very informative. do a search on the site you can learn allot buy just reading the posts in saltwater and the reports.

hi
your rod is great but the reel is ok when you have the chance i would maybe upgrade the reel to maybe a shimano symetre or a seido just something with a bit higher quality with a reel with a few more ball bearings so it is smoother. but for your leader your braid is alright i am presuming you are targeting bream and flathead go down to 6lb leader that is a nice even strength but gets more bites than the 10lb also pick up a pack berkley powerbaits in pumkinseed (3"), 3" gulp minnow in pumkinseed and i think it is called neon blue a great colour in clear water and a pack of atomic 2" grubs or squidgy wrigglers for dirtier water when the bite is shut down and also buy a pack of 1/16 jigheads. thats just a few little things i know i hope it helps.

One thing that is overlooked a lot for new sp users is hook gape. It is easy to find smaller hooks in the lighter weights, but for a 3" sp I would be looking for probably a 2/0 size hook and 3/0 for 4" and 5/0 for 5" baits. Unfortunately the choices are narrowed down a lot to fish say 1/8oz 5/0 jigs as there are only 2 brands I have come accross so far. There is a real need to be able to get the sink rate correct for the current and water depth and line weights.

Jack.

Thanks for all your advice guys , I'll go and get some other jig heads soon.
Just went out to Manly harbour for a flick ( 11:00pm ) but windy as hell and too much noise.
I'll wait unitll this weather is over to try again. ;D
