landbased pine 27-12-07

went fishing today down at the deepwater bend pontoon. got there at around 11 for the last of the incoming and to fish the outgoing. a few undersized bream and queenies on the top of the tide and managed to get 3 keepers on the runout. 26 33 and 24cm respectively.

all the damage was done on whole small pillys. got two undersized bream on a small ecogear hb (dunno the name sorry). threw the net for a bit but no success. any ideas on when the prawns will be around there?


all in all it was a good day and managed to stay dry and it wasnt too windy.

i picked up a few eogear CK for 5$ each the other day at BCF was it one of them

good to see u got a few ay did u say u got sum queeen fish any pics of them mate?

the prawns should turn up late feb march and april

nah no pics of the queenies. they were pretty small river queenies. didnt get any pics but will probably get some more when i get back from canberra

I must have gone past you Daniel. I was out in the boat taking a couple of rellies from down south for a run up the river. I tried to launch early at Clontarf, but the tide was so low I couldn't use the ramp so I launched at Cabbage Tree Creek and ran across Bramble Bay into the Pine. I picked up my passengers at the Deep Water Bend pontoon about ten and ran them down to the mouth to have a look at the bridges. While we were there we saw a dugong, just outside the Houghton Highway - a first in the Pine for me. I've seen plenty over at Moreton and quite a few in the Bribie Passage but never in the pine before. There was no doubt because it surfaced only about 10 metres ahead of the boat and then came up to breathe another half dozen times before we left. With the big tide nearing its top I then did a run upstream as far as Lawnton and back, dropping them off at about midday. It was quite a nice day on the river, although we stopped under the highway bridges (along with a few others) to sit out a misty shower that came through. I didn't bother fishing since 'tourists' and fishing don't mix very well. The trip back across Bramble Bay was a bit lumpy, but it was nice to get the boat out again after a bit of a break.

Theres quite a few small Queeny's in the pine. Catch em often in the cast net when prawning. All the size of your hand though a great sign for the river.
Obviously they go back in!

yeah there is some good signs for that river on my last trip cast netting for prawns i caught my first jew well it was only about 8cm long and caught in the cast net it amazed me because id never seen one so small he was carefully released to do some more growing.
