As I'm in the hospitality industry, working on xmas day is the usual. So to make up for this I thought I would take Boxing Day off and head up the hill from Cairns for an arvo fish.
We got on the water about 1pm and headed to an area where I was reasonably confident to pick up a fish. We were fishing B-52's along a shallow bank, and within no time (first cast) I was on, not once, but three times in one cast. I hooked up and lost the fish but got it in on the third time. I am fairly confident that the fish that hit it first was not the one I ended up with.
This was only a puppy and not what we came for, however I was amazed at the ferrocity in which these fish had hit my lure.
By 1:30pm I had racked up 5 small barra and my mate had got one. When the water police pulled up extremely quietly beside us (I did not even know they were there) they had said they were watching the hectic action from a distance but had a job to do...After a quick chat, usual licence check, and some info on where they had seen fish on their sounder, they left and we got back in to it again.
The score by 4pm was 2 barra for my mate, 11 for me and 9 dropped.
Even though they were only small and no meterys, it was still awesome and a lot of fun. I mean who can knock a session like that, with the huge possibility for a metery to get in on the action.
We caught a few more smaller barra (I lost two bigger models) in the arvo just on sunset, two days earlier using tango dancers and also watching my mate use a crazy looking home made fizzer. But it worked, so who was I to judge?? wasn't the same sort of firing session, however watching barra smash surface lures is just unreal. Especially when they don't get it the first time and come back again for another go!!!!!
No photos unfortunately, even though I had a camera in my pocket, but I could not put the rod down in between fish on both occasions as I wanted to make the most of the action whilst it was on.
Cheers
Matt
