I am getting my self a little xmass present as................ I have been such a good boy this year::) !!
I was hoping that I could get some advice? ;)
I am looking to get a reel that will be mainly used for snapper on sp’s, now this is the part where I think im going to struggle I would also like it to be able to cope with throwing a slug for tuna and macs and be a good all-rounder. Am I reaching too far or am I better off just getting a reel for use with sp’s for the snapper?? I have about $250 but I need to load it with braid out of that to! Any advice or comments welcome
Thanks gazza,
and a very merry xmass to all:)

If you are throwing at Macs and tuna you will need line capacity, any of the top brand reels in the 2500-3000 size is your best bet

Tough ask there in the price range but you could look at a Shimano Starlo Stix Snapper Spin 5-8kg rod and a mid priced 4000 size reel eg Penn Affinity or one of the late model Stradics.
Just reread your post and realised you are just after a reel. I would buy two midpriced outfits suited to ther particular task rather than spend it all on a multipurpse outfit that won't do each scenario properly. A Snapper SP outfit and a pelagic spin rig are miles apart

I'd try and hold out on the braid. Put some cheap mono on it till you can afford. Way better off spending the extra cash on a decent reel. Get a Team Daiwa Advantage 4000A. around $269. Cheaper if you look around. If you really want the braid straight up, look at the Daiwa Tierra 4000. Same drag as the Sol. I myself in that price range would search out a Daiwa Sol and pay around $270, I imagine if you look hard.

I guess if you are trying to hedge your bets I would lean closer to a larger and faster real that is suited to tuna as you can still use it for plastics. If you get something smaller and slower it will do plastics but not tuna.
If you get the reel that suits what you do most you can get the second one later

Mate dont go too big, all you need is a new shimano stradic 2500 or diawa sol 2500 for the biggest snapper, match it with 10 or 8lb crystal fireline and your hunting with the top end of town.

Yeah, have been looking at reelz lately and the sol is a stand out. The cheapest i have found it is $275.00.
Anyone know where i might find one a bit cheaper (brisbane gold coast) or should i wait for after christmas and see what sales are on?
Getting a daiwa advantage 8 - 14lb for christmas and these 2 should pair up very nicely.

Mate get ya backside into The place that starts with A and ends in Art...The Capalaba store. Go and have a chat to old mate Steve in there and ask him to show you the Shimano combo's he has!!! Bloody great starters setup for $99 rod and reel. That will get you a good Shimano rod and a entry level Shimano Reel.
Mate of mine just scored one for Crissy and he is very happy with it!

G'day Gazza,
I know you saw our thread on the trip yesterday...the reel damo caught the xos cobe on is a new Penn 360 slammer, it has quite a fair retrieve ratio of 5.1:1 and the oversize drag underneath the spool will pull bigger than expected drag pressures for the size of that reel. The main shaft is Heavy Duty. The reel is well engineered and reasonably priced with good warranty and a back up service network. You'd be able to buy the reel, 250 mts of 10kg Sufix Performance and still have some left over for a slab of christmas cheer!!! I can certainly recommend them.
Cheers

I got mine off ebay shipped from the usa for about $210. At the time i couldn't find one under 300. The price all depends on the exchange rate however. Worth a look though

Cheers BF, i have looked at a few OS sites and prices seem to be about $230 -$240 delivered. But i think i'd rather buy local for the extra 30 or so bucks.
$210 i could probably handle from OS, will keep looking.

I have just purchased the Diawa regal plus baitrunner. Got it for a song at $99 with a rec retail price at $150. I have matched it to a live fibre 8- 12 kg stick. Reel runs nice and smooth with good drag pressure. Bought it from fcb or the like.

Good to see some of you guys helping the US economy as they presently need all the help they can get, don't worry about the local tackle shops, just use them to compare prices and get info from.:(

I'll recommend the Sol, great reel. Thought I'd add a couple of pics to show what my 2500 has dealt with.
Good luck
Simon
