Did any one else see the flatty head at the Cabbage Tree ramp on sat arv.
I dont know the full workings of these creatures but from what I have heard/read etc this beast would have been a big breeding female. It measured ACROSS the skull 250+mm and the length was over 350mm.

remember this was the HEAD only.
I only had my phone so some poor quality pics were taken in the headlights when we got back to the ramp around 7.30pm. Buggered if I can figure how to get them on the site.

I am not into tree huggin, howling at the moon, sh8t BUT, this skull was WAY over legal and I am somewhat bothered by the fact that someone dumped this thing for all to see as a trophy or.............I dont know.......

apart from that it was a great arv on the water, got some good muddies, nearly ran over some shark bait (skier) at twilight at Marks rocks, AND..........(FANFARE)

got a spot in the carpark!!!!! yes I know, I nearly didnt believe it myself.

Happy Days
Matt.

250mm is 10 inches. Used to be said an inch across the head was a pound of flathead. 10 pound flathead. 4.5 kg. I'd say it was bigger than the 70cm limit.

It's a shame.

I caught an 89cm flattie down the Pin a few years ago and it's head was bigger than my hand, so given those dimensions definately a big breeder, a shame really :(

i thought your allowed to keep bar tailed flathead above 30cm. It's only sand flathead that you can't keep above 70cm.b

You got a carpark? amazing!, all the money that we put into the economy and what have they done for boaties launching from cabbage tree or jacobs wells in last 25 years? nuthin , not one extra parking spot or ramp, really is a disgrace, they should buy that small farmhouse to left of ramp and build small harbour and ramp with parking spaces.

That's a shame really. Take a photo of it and put it back, whoever you were.
One point to note, you have been warned, don't do it too often we may catch you out>:(

Bet they'd be mates with the guys ripping off all the stuff from vehicles at ramps around the place too:(

Had a guy banned from another site who was a complete toss. He actually posted his days catch which included many undersized fish as well as 2 oversize fish that had had there tails cut clean off which then made them just 70cm on the brag mat. Needless to say after he posted those pics he didnt last long on the site!

Angus

P.S. All fish i am referring to where Flatties and it was in the Pin vicinity hence the relevance to the original post.

Certainly not the right thing by law but really does anyone know when a big flathead becomes more or less sterile (not fecund?)...I don't.

In the real world if this fish was huge she may not have much or anything to contribute to the species anymore apart from being one of them. There is every chance a person should be more outraged by a just illegal female being taken by some tosser than this particular girl.

Yer the fisheries probably know when they go sterile. Hence the Size limits. Thats just plain sad.

I believe in karma, I don't think they do because they would have thought twice or maybe they're just senseless or clueless... Possibly an novice fisherman that went out knowing shit all and happened to come across a beast and didn't know anything about the rules and decided to slay the 'mother ship'....

But seriously, who just beheads a fish like that and leaves it on the ramp...

Nah it's easier than simply trusting in some god, all higher animals once at breeding age taper off until they are more or less barren. Suspect fisheries would know because it's a very simple understanding to investigate if allowed to in law.

So outrage is nice and easy but there could well be a higher plane of understanding as it relates to these fish....if fisheries do not have an upper no take limit in regulation it could have much more to do with their continuing preservationist ideology than sustainability of a species which is to be respected.

Like I said I dunno what size...but basic biological rules will always apply no matter what the spin or from what quarter it comes from.

Yeah I know, but at what size after 70cm does the justification for the 70cm no longer apply, certainly when it dies of old age it will no longer breed, is it baron at 90? 100? 85? , what % fecund at any of these sizes, if so why are they still protected if no longer fecund at a particular lenght, so to pull it back to the original thread who is to say this fish although regulated as illegal was actually a 'breeding' female if it was that large, it's not as if the DPI mandate recfishing regulations based on sustainability as a key criteria, so it's anyones guess...unless in the know, I am not.

Who cares if its a breeder or not. Why would you keep a fish that would taste like the bottom of an old thong?
A flattie that size is not worth eating, take a few pics and put it back.:-/

If the fish wasn't a dusky flathead. That person has done nothing wrong.
The orginal post only stated flathead, not type.

We shouldn't be making comments like this b4 you know the full story. So lets say he / she caught a 90cm bar tail flathead. ( they are entilted to keep it , if they wish. It's within the size and bag limits.

How do you tell the difference between the 3 from just the head?

it might just be my ignorance, but have u ever heard of a sandie or a bar-tailed flattie over 80cm? esp in the area in question? from my experiance, these fish tend to be on the smaller side of the size scale, finding a legal one is fairly rare in seq, in fact i have only caught a handful of each species and they were further north and none were legal.

WTF? Someone ban that Tiffany clown.

For what it's worth, I agree with land lubber, I doubt very much if the flattie head in question was anything but a dusky, because no other species of flathead grow to that sort of size. So you could be pretty certain it was an illegal act by whomever caught and kept the fish.

The sad thing is, a lot of part time anglers still don't know the rules regarding dusky flathead slot limits. I caught an 81 cm lizard at the Pin one day, and a couple of young blokes anchored nearby, swam over to the beach I was fishing from, and watched me land the fish. They were aghast when I released it, and after being told of the laws, they proclaimed they would have kept it, as they wouldn't have known any better. :-[

Cheers

What i'm implying is. We don't know if it was a dusky or not. Just looking at the head will not tell the full story. Besides i have caught quite a few sand and bar tail flathead above 80 over the years. They are usually by catch.

Rare doesn't mean there isn't any' and who said they are rare???????????. Looks like the fishermen filleted the fish at the ramp.

I took a mate for a first time plastic run in the brissy river at daek and pulled up one about that big until it busted off and looked like a shovel nosed shark at first. The twit probably thought it was to.
