Hi All
Got up at 2.30am and checked the weather radar only to see a band of heavy showers sweeping across Brisbane’s west and heading straight for the east. Oh well, what’s the worst that can happen, get a bit wet – and the wind was non-existent. So launched at 3.30am and headed to a local spot.
There were a few shows on the sounder but the bait/fish were pretty scattered with no concentration. Did 2 drifts for very little and decided to head to greener water columns. Smooth ride across the bay and arrived at 'secret' Column X to find no-one around. Circulated over a few spots but there was very little to get excited about! Persisted till about 7ish before making the call to head off to 'very secret' Column X for the turn of the tide at 7.30.
Now, when I 1st got my boat about 18 months ago, a good mate said that there’s no such thing as ‘too expensive’ when it comes to a Sounder – and after this morning, I can only agree! I set the Gain to 80% and off I went searching for life. Well didn’t 'very secret' Column X reveal its inhabitants at 80%! Bait fish in varying thickness and arches surrounding them, all holding on the bottom. Sent my cast net into the FAD bag and got a heap of fresh live 7” Shad’s with a few 5” live shaddies mixed in with them :P . Deployed one of each out and at 8am, the 1st keeper came on board. By 9.30am, a bag was achieved! In between, lost a good fish to a knot failure (silly T) and got sliced off twice (presumably Mackerel)! In one particular show, there was a big ball of baitfish holding on the bottom with 4 big arches hovering over the top. Sent down my FAD and tap tap, no weight – clean slice through 16lb leader :'( . Pick of the livies was the 7” which accounted for 4 of the 5 fat little pinkies.
Spent another hour just drifting along enjoying the gorgeous conditions ;D and marking ground while a pod of about 20 dolphins played around the area. Headed back in about 10.30ish without a drop of rain hitting the boat throughout the morning. The 3 fattest pinkies (all in the mid 50’s) were chock with small crabs – pic below.
Take Care T
PS: Those who have fished with me and know about 'Prawns & 5', saw him at the ramp this morning and should've seen the size of the Snapper he caught yesterday... Another of his 1m fish :P ::) !
