What is the difference? Isn't fireline just a brand of braid?

Fireline is a gelspun line, not a true braid. If you look at Fireline closely it looks a bit like dental floss, where as braid is actually braided like a tiny piece of rope. Hence the name braid.

Fireline is more suited to spin reels. I doubt you would see many guys running it on a baitcaster. I'ts very stiff compared to braided line. Your less inclined to get wind knots when casting. Having said that, braid is a lot softer, and is more suited to Baitcaster reels. I run both on spin reels. A thin diameter braid and 8pd and below fireline. 8, 6, 4,3,2 pd respectively.

Braided line such as FINS PRT is actually braided while fireline is the same fibres thermally fused. Stren Microfibre is braided then fused. each line has pro's and cons

as said fireline is great in the smaller weights.. as said its stiffer than braid, so it casts great, doesnt coil and knot like mono... i use fireline on my spin reels.. its very sensitive, fortunatly/unfortuatly it has little. to no stretch.. i find though when tying knots to really put some stress on them before you trim the excess to stop them slipping, again because of the no stretch. but yer i highly recommend it, not so much for a leader but a main line its great.
