My first reel 38 years ago on the northern rivers of NSW was a closed face. I used a 6 foot single handed pistol grip with 6 pound mono for bass mostly. The ease of use, accuracy of casting and simple construction offset any technical negatives for me at that age. The reel was a Daiwa silver series & it never lost me a fish.

That reel accounted for literally hundreds of bass (& some other species) up to 4 1/2 pound over about 5 years, by then it was well worn and I bought my 1st Daiwa Millionaire (a 5H which I still have and works the same as when I bought it).

I bought my 2 sons aged 7 & 10 Abumatic 476 closed faced reels last year and have been disappointed with them. They are heavy, hard action reels compared to my old silver series Daiwa.

My question is does anyone have current silver series Daiwa closed face reels and if so what do you think of them as I am thinking of buying a couple for the boys for Christmas ?

I tend to agree with you on the ABU product,I have a Royal Cast (basicly a Silvercast without the bearings) that my daughter uses when she comes fishing with me and for around $50 it's great. The Silvercast is still every bit as good as it was years ago (I bought one back in the late 70's) and should set you back about $75,if you can find another $20 a reel though my choice would be the Goldcast, the advantage this reel has over the others is the oscilating spool,it makes for a much better line lay.
