Hi everyone,

After Christmas the family and I are heading on a week long camping fishing trip on the beach. We plan on doing a heap of surf fishing so I am taking my newly purchased 12ft surf rod + a couple of 6-7ft boat rods (as the inlaws are taking a tiny they'll launch off the beach).

My question is, I have a D22 Naravara ST-R with the Nissan alloy bullbar which has 42mm odd bars above each head light that run on an angle to the car. Is there a rod holder that is made at an angle so that the rods don't go right across the windshield but parallel down the passenger side of the car?

Alternatively is there a rod holder with u-bolts that fit the 75mm centre bar over the grill?

All I can find are the Wilson branded rod holers which are all made for square bullbars. >:(

My bull bar has slight angles on the sides so put the wilson rod holder on ( the quick release one with the ajustable height pole ) and I gave it a gentle twist to point it straighter.

I'm with tailor get a set of the removable ones. you can give them a slight adjustment without to much drama.

Mate, make your own. I have a Hilux with the same sort of angles and was posed with a a similar prob.

Get yourself a piece of five ply about 450mm long by 250mm wide.
Next get some PVC 50 mm conduit or plumbers pipe and cut to a suitable length say 280mm, cut out a rectangular section on the end of the pipe where the reel seat will slide in to.
Next get some full saddles for the size pipe and screw over the pipe to the five ply. You now have your rod holders screwed to the timber.

Now buy 2 u bolts (preferably stainless steel) that will go round the bar.

Next position your 5 ply so the rods will run parallel to the length of the car, drill your holes in the ply and fit with the u bolts.

It'll cost you about 10 bucks especially if you can scrounge some of the materials.

If you need some photos send me a PM and I'll organise it.

I had the same problem with the Hilux bar and did not want the rods running at an angle. I already had the rod holders from a previous model so went and got 2 muffler clamps for $5 each and used them instead as they fit over the larger center bar (A quick cut off of the bottom bit on the U clamps was needed)

When I had my STR I ran mine on the angle from the 40mm tube on from the passenger side accross to about the centre of the windscreen. When you're driving and concentrating on the road you won't notice it but your missus will let you know all about how annoying they are etc etc blah blah blah.

Alternatively as has been said earlier you can buy the removable type rod holders that mount on a 20 x 20 box section, add to this an adaptor kit to fit your central 63mm bar and you can run your rods in a straight line right down the centre of your car.

Hope this helps.

How easy is it to bend or twist the removable holder in the lowest position?

I would imagine you'd break the welds if you used too much leverage. :o

I purchase a standard rod holder and 3" conversion kit on sale today from BCF. I am going to run it on the middle bar straight over the windshield.

My next question is, I assume I need to tie the 12ft rod down and then tie the 7ft rods to it with some soft of cloth separating them from the cars paint?

There seems to be a fair bit of movement. Or should I angle the roads up higher?

It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure all accessories
and equipment attached to a motor vehicle are designed
and fitted in a manner which reduces the risk of injury
to pedestrians and other road users making contact with
the vehicle when the vehicle is parked or in motion.
Driving lights/brackets must not protrude forward from
the front face of any bumper or above the top of any
bull bar.

Fishing rod holders can only be fitted providing they
comply with the following conditions:

• The fitting allows the driver a view of the road and
of traffic to the front and sides of the vehicle.

• They must only be attached to the left side of
the vehicle.

• They must be designed to carry no more than four
fishing rods.
• Rods, hooks and sinkers must be properly secured.

• Vehicle lighting must not be obstructed by rods
or holders.

• Rod holders must be either removed when they are
not in use or retracted behind the profile of the
bull bar.

So you either unbolt it each and everytime you start and stop the car, or fit a removeable one. If you have a removeable one, how can it be fitted without covering at least some of the light fitting?

I wouldn't worry about all that, since I would have seen 20 4WDs this week with rod holders fitted and no rods in them. Half of them were mounted in the centre for the same reason I am.

Also, I'll just mount it to the left of centre about 1 inch then its legal LOL!

I am about to fit my wilson rod holder. Same issue with the angle. For it to be straight, the outer set of holes will be used for the outer clamp, but the inner set I will just use the lower hole, and have this as the top clamp hole. If you can picture it, this will set the holder straight. I will then just get a piece of plate aluminium about 150mm long and put in 3 holes. Two of the holes will match the 2 holes in the rod holder, and the 3rd will be the new bottom hole for the clamp. So the clamp will have one end in the centre of the 3 holes, and the other in the bracket. The top hole in the bracket and holder will just be a connection point to bolt the bracket to the holder.

Hope that makes sense.

With my bull bar, that will angle the rods straight down the side of the vehicle.

[/left] I dont worry about it too much... But the cops here are pricks, they will pull you over, and try to defect you on something that is complete carp, let alone something I know they can get you on.

PS they dont like it when you pull the regulations out of your glovebox and ask them to show you the rule for the defect they claim you have.
