Hi all

With the year rapidly coming to the blunt end and a burning desire to get a holiday under our belts before the masses, the wife and I decided it was now or never and we headed to South Straddie for a weeks R&R. For anyone who hasn't as yet stayed at Couran Cove...I can highly recommend it. I had no idea this place was so huge and that there was so much to do. Simply brilliant and especially for anyone with a young family!!!

As you can only get there by boat we decided to take the tinny...that way we could come and go as we pleased. I must admit it looked bloody small in the harbor (see picture attached) up against all the Gin Palaces:-[...but it got us there and back just fine. Thanks to Rudi Maas for looking after the car & Trailer for the week!!

The few times I did sneak away to fish (Remembering it was a FAMILY holiday) I drifted the passage north and south of the resort itself with not much to show for my efforts. I did get onto some decent ground just south of the resort around Oyster beds and it was hear that I landed a few Brim (all went back). I had one of those freaky moments at this spot!! I was on a slow Northerly drift about 50Mtrs from the Oyster Beds and had just cracked a can of coke...Bent down to put the coke in the cup holder when I hear this almighty splash. I swear it sounded like a wheel had come of a plan.....This splash was Massive and as I looked up I could see the wake from whatever it was:o. Scary stuff....Here you are in a tinny and your mind starts racing....That splash was too big for a fish....More like a whale....Not here??? WHAT THE?? Like a good fisherman I chucked my placcie at it....dunno what I was gunna do if it hooked up??

The crew from Anaconda were having a product training conference at the resort and a few of the boys were out in the YAKS and were landing some good size Jacks. At least somebody was landing some fish!

Had a great week and highly recommend the resort!!

I can vouch for Couran Cove resort being huge. I used to service it every six weeks. Plenty on fish in the harbor and lagoon where the vehicle barge lands as well.

BB was it Friday that you saw this big spash? It was around Midday and I was chucking HB's at a snag near Perry's Hole, which leads directly out to the Pin Bar and I saw the same thing, but I caught the end of the animals splash. It was too big for a dolphin, maybe a dugong but do they breach or jump out of the water and do they come down this far south, I don't know.

Any way the system is healthly that for sure. As for a mid week fish, I'll be doing more of it with no traffic around at all. I too couldn'tcatch anything on the plastics or HB's and had to resort to pumping yabbies to get a feed of whiting.

Can you fish in the actual resort if you're staying there? (e.g. sitting on the back deck with a beer flicking plastics?

Hi There mate, Fished the area a few times and it is well know for spinner sharks. I have seen two in one day about four kilometers apart . They jump clear of the water at least 2 meters high and it looks prety impresive to see.
The most recent one that I saw was opposite the cabage tree ramp near the sand bank. The average length is about 2meters long and a very long thin shark.
cheers.;D

Couran cove is a great place , we are often there as well, You can fish from your balcony if you want, but I think the management may not like it.

Best to try the lagoon behind the reception, I was ther a couple of weeks ago and saw some monster bream there but the security might tell you to stop.

I reckon the splash might have been a string ray, I;ve seen a few clear the water.

I go with the stingrays. Below Coochie they are mad. One porpoised along 6 times and almost collided with me :(. I was starting to get a little anxious as this thing was huge. Next week was just east of Coochie jetty and a big stingray did the leap again 2 different times. They fold their wings just like a diving Tern. Amazing site.

Hi all

Yeah a stingray or Spinner shark would make sense I guess. Bloddy big whatever it was. Yeah you can fish the marina...would be great for a night time KAY or flick around the pontoons. As for the inside estuary...all sorts of species in there and some bigger stuff to. A little late night or early morning flick wouldn't hurt. I was Mullet, Bream, whiteing etc

Great to hear you had a good time at Couran Cove. Behind the harbour villas in the main canel their is plenty of trevors under all the pontoons you will have a field day with soft plastics there. I actually have a harbourside unit there i have it for rent if any ausfish members are keen for a stay I can give you a great price (50% off the normal rate) which means about $150 per night.
cheers

Lucky tourist to be eaten soon. LOL.
