I decided to try some new ground, looking for this secret jackland Ive heard so much about. I can’t get any jacks on the gold coast, so we headed up around the pin sat morning. First cast, bang the bloodup prawnstar gets nailed and a 39cm redfish comes in the boat for a photo on the lie detector.

I dunno what species he is, but those nice blokes over on ausfish reckon hes a ps cutter? Im on the board now, so Im happy. A few casts later, his big brother bites thru my 20lb leader and takes my lure to his hideout. First time Ive been bitten thru the leader, usually they rub me off on structure. Another big brother couldn’t tell which end of a hardbody had the trebles in. He attacked and he spat, and he got away. I told him there was hooks at both ends, so hes got a 50/50 chance of getting it right, and he still got it wrong, oh well.

Next I get a 38cm cod on an el natrual prawnstar. The deckie got a 35cm redfish on a R2S popper in 2 ft of water. I still haven’t got one on a popper yet, might be cos I don’t use em much?

Bumped into an ausfish mate at 5.15am, and 3 hrs later he was still jackless…..that will teach you for starting late. Hmm, maybe I should wait til he puts his report up, or I might be redfaced?

The jacks were everywhere this morning. We got rained on, and it rained again, but we didn’t care.

cheers
Andrew

Well done Andrew, good to see you on the board, that Pin area is really good for those nasty red fish - I got a small 24cm Jack (1st of the season) in the same area a couple of weeks ago. Spoke to Marty this morning and he was still jackless but had some good cod and flatties, still could produce the goods though - we'll wait for the report.

Fishing with Marty in next weekends Bream/Jack Social might have to head up to the Pin for that one.

Cheers

John

Well I should've had a report to post but got done over by a Jack this morning - good solid hookup but the leader busted - I think I am being too sporting :'(

Plenty of good cod and flathead about - it was a pity the wind kicked in so early this morning as it made any open water very difficult to fish. At least I know the Jacks are still there swimming around, even if it is with a bit of extra jewellery!

Thanks guys, Im away now, watch out fishies. Yeah, theyre only little today, but the bigger ones were around too. Might have to go to 30lb leader for HBs. Does anybody use flurocarbon leader at 30-40lb?, it seems most shops just sell abrasive resistant mono for leader above 20lb. The Yamatoyo 40lb has worked well for me last summer, but its not fc. Didnt seem to matter at night, but it might matter for dawn raids?

Its amazing how a change of tactics can produce the goods. Id been pinning all my hopes on mullet flesh and night sessions, cos that worked for me last summer, but now hard lures and dawn raids might see me getting up early again. Looks like I'll stockup on bloodups too.

cheers

Well done mate. I must be the only ausfisher to still be jackless after only taking serious fishing only 4 years ago and only trying to target them once only. I purchased a new t curve baitcaster with a shimano curuxis to get myself one. Cheers.

i find penn 10x leader to be great,it ties great knots and is tough with a little stretch.i have caught hundreds of fish including jacks in clear water with it.i use no less than 40lb for hardbody casting and don't lose lures and don't lose many fish.if a fish escapes with a lure in it's mouth it will starve to death long before the hooks rust out.i feel a responsibility to the fish to fish barbless with heavy leader.at least your tackle box will thank you for it.my fishing partner uses 20lb and i use 40lb i have landed 7 jacks this season and lost not one lure my mate has lost two lures and landed one jack after i put him on 40lb...he now uses 40lb all the time
