i used to live up north in a twon called collinsville inland of bowen. there was a river stocked with barra quite big ones 20+pound some up to 35 huge things. me and my dad found any gold lure worked really well, gold bomber lures if you buy them but me and my dad just made replica's of them because we were loosing quite a few.

it all depends on what fish you are targetting i presume if you are headed to weipa your looking at barra.

We caught all our Barra on Tsunami shads around Weipa.Got a couple on Bomber Minnows but the placcies slayed em,especially the 4" shads in chartreuse-silver.

Is it necessary to have a wide range of poppers, eg size, shape and colour or is the surface commotion enough to get the fishing going?

we found lots of fish in the Wenlock liked the orange backed goldf18 that runs about 8'.

In saying that I'm starting to have some sympathy for the fly fishing types that fish only one fly pattern for trout, say a red tag. Given that is a dry fly, they don't need to worry about depth, unlike with lures. However in my heart of hearts, much as I like collecting lures, I'm starting to wonder if any lure in front of a fish in the mood is the right lure.................

From trips to the Peron islands in the Territory, I'd suggest some chrome metal lures to jig or cast for macks including spaniards

Yes pack a few different size poppers spiero. Small to Large. They will get taken by anything that's hungry.

When you say large, how large are we talking here?

the popper we used to use varied from about 3 inch to like 7 we made all of ours but i caught a metre long queenie on a store bought popper that had been chomped in half that i had then resanded so it ended up being like 2 inchs

just make sure what you get has a very good 'blopping action' if you get what i mean

i live in darwin and alot off us will use barra classics .they come in a range of sizes and depths. ofcourse ur gold bombers r a gd lure but fluro green is dynamite on accasions. iv also just started using rapala x-raps these lures arnt cheap but believe me they make up fo it. also plastics go off its what i use 70% of the time im fishing all depends on depth and water clarity 2 decide which 1s to use.

Hi Spiero ... Since you will be in Weipa for the end of the run off ( maybe) & I was allowed only 5 lures ...... I'd be going Killalure Flatz rat & Lively 75mm mad mullet ( these are your snag bashing barra & jack lures)
Then a Classic 120 for trolling for just about anything & a gold bomber for shallow work ( upgrade the hooks)
Poppers ...... :P Just about anything will do if worked well & the fish are in the mood ( I like the Bills bug range .... or for less $$$ The River 2 Sea bubble pops)
I hope this helps ....... & I'm looking forward to your report!!! .... Cheers, Nagg

Yeah mate i cant wait till im able to write a report on the trip cause im thinking its gunna be awesome!!!! Im alloud more than five lures, its just that i thought that many people would have a completly different range of lures which could make my decisions on what to get harder that it currently is? So with 5, i would be able to chase up alot easier. You didnt mention plastics Nagg, any reason there or is it you dont rate them?

Hey Top-Ender I am moving up to Darwin in January would be interested to learn some of the techniques and styles you use up your way particularly your use of placcies etc. I have not seen much info on using softies for Barra most of what i have seen is guys either trolling or casting hardbodies around.

Gold bomber, 28-gram bumpa bar, skipping popper (smilin' jacks are good and cheap), 4-inch snapback in white or a light fluoro colour, halco scorpion 90 deep, and any big deep diver for mackeral (yo-zuri hydro magnums are my fave). That's six, but there's always room for one more lure!

Spiero ...... No mention of SPs ( Thats a whole new kettle of fish) & yes I rate them highly because they work ( my mate did quite well on them during our road trip)
Mate ... your options are endless depending on target species ( I'd carry 100mm Slick rigs & Shads in the 75-130mm range with a variety of weighted jig heads! ........ Its just endless ..... Nagg
