Hi all,

I've got an 84 Landcruiser, recently I had been finding that overnight my brakelights were coming on and draining my battery for no reason. For a while I simply disconnected the battery when I wasn't using it and it was fine as they worked fine when I drove it, and to fix them when they came on I would just put the key in the ignition, or giving the touch.

Anyway, after a while of doing this, it got to a stage where I couldn't get them to turn off at all.

I though the problem would be the switch on the pedal, but after disconecting it and trying it on a small circuit it seemed to work fine. Also, the brake lights even stay on when the switch is removed????

To me this is weird, I thought the brake lights turned off when the circuit was broken by the switch when you pressed the pedal in.

Would really appreciate some thoughts, as I want to get the boat out on the water but can't drive the truck with the brake lights on the whole time.

Check your wiring harness under the vehicle, sounds like you have sustained a crush injury to the wiring harness from driving over a log or rocks flying or something similar. In the right circumstances several wires can be mashed together creating a circuit. I have sustained this sort of thing about 5 times over the years from offroad driving in heavily timbered and rocky terrain.

Jack.

Check around your trailer plug wiring, quite often this is where the problem lies as its generaly set low on the vehicle and with a load on it going over hills can cause it to drag and do as tunaticer said ,good luck Snas

It wouldn't be as simple as the return spring on the pedal being worn out?

Mate the problem will be the electric brake controller if you have one and I bet it will be a Tekonsha. Mine is doing the same thing and so is my mates. Spoke to the auto electrician about it and says he has a box full of them that did the same thing. Tekonsha knew about it but havn't offerd to replace on a recal or any such thing.
