I'm after a new car to tow the new boat. Because I help run a bushwalking club it has to be an 7/8 seater so I can carry maximum people. I thought the logical choice would be the imported Delica 4WD van, which can carry 8 comfortably and also could tow my Stabi with no problems. It is a grey import but with pajero running gear and the delica body I don't think parts will be a problem. Ugly as well but hey, I'm more after practicality.

A 97/98 delica would be between 16-20k.

But now I've thought that for the same money I could get a Prado/Pajero/Patrol - a proper 4WD which come in 7 and 8 seat versions. Just wondering, are these rear seats actually usable by adults?

I don't plan on doing any serious off road work but it would be good to have that option particularly would like to start looking at beach work.

Any help is appreciated.

I own a patrol coil cab and an 80 series cruiser would be the go for you. Much better than patrol wagons (smoother and faster). It can seat 7 people and tow and do beachwork easily. And yes the rear double seat (that folds up) is usable by adults. And you can get a good 1 for about 14k and they are everywhere. Last for many many years. IMO

Never too many ;D , but do these sit side by side? Some trips are reasonably long so it needs to be comfortable, hence the question about the back row of seats.

I thought about the landcruiser but it seems a bit big, it would also need to be driven around the city too, which is why I thought prado.

My troopy seats 11. But they are 'down the side seats'.
Great for pushing up out of the way, to carry loads/bits etc, but can fold down to take the mob out an about...
I must admit, I aint ever been in the back whilst mobile, (I'm the skipper!) although I dont think it would be too comfortable without regular rest stops.
It works fine for us.

Would you be able to comfortably do 7 adults for a long trip (2-3 hrs)?

As simmo2 said there are 8 seats in the back 4 along each side and everybody puts there feet in the middle, and there are 3 seats in the front, one just a bench seat. But if there is only 8 people they can put there feet on the seat oppisite to them, then its like a recliner seat:P.

Yeah Simmo2 the new 78 series are, which changed in 1998 to coil front. But in joeT's price range it will only be a 75 series. Dont do it, get an 80 series. :). Its going to cost me $1500 just to get my patrol front to ride as good as a cruiser 80 series.

How are the rear seats in an 8 seat Prado?

My old man's got an 80series with all the seats. The very rear row is really uncomftable. You sit about 6 inches off the ground with your knees up. Also not much space behind the 3rd row when in use. Troopies are alright. I've spent plennty of time in the back of SES trucks at wildfires for hot changeovers. Leaf springs can be comfy if they're set up right.
I know cruisers and patrols are tough, I have no idea about the delica
