I am seriously thinking about an in car navigation system.

I have no trouble operating GPS units, but I believe these things are different.

I need to know the pit falls. Or the User un-friendly ones.

The criteria/ parameters are :-

4" TFT touch screen

least amount of ' add ons ' as possible

up to the minute mapping

off road / dirt tracks

input gps marks

warranty

accuracey

store located in Brisvegas

any and all assistance is appreciated.

Cheers Phill

Mate I haven't heard of a waterproof one yet.
That feature would have to be in the list of criteria you must have wouldn't it or are you going to mount it from the hoodlining??
Cheers Scott :)

Phill, the Magellan Crossover GPS Traveller Value Pack is the ONLY thing out there that will meet your requirements.:D

https://www.nextdestination.com.au/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductId=244

It currently runs 2 separate SD cards. 1 card does all your street navigation with turn by turn instructions. The other card has the Magellan Australian Topographic maps. This does you traditional GPS functions and has probably one of the best mapsets around. No other unit that I can find does both to this level of useability and accuracy.;D

I run a PDA/GPS in my car. It has TomTom for the street navigation and I have installed OziExplorer on it. OziExplorer is a great program but it limited to the poor quality of maps available for queensland:'( . The Magellan Topo maps are much better and I actuall take a Magellan Explorist with me and run it concurrently::) .

I am looking at doing a new system soonish. but don't tell Donna:-X . It will consit of a 2DIN 7" LCD touch screen DVD player (possibly pioneer) with a laptop connected to a video input. The laptop will have both TomTom and OziExplorer installed so I have the same functions as the PDA. The GPS unit will probably be a Magellan Explorist XL or the Crossover (which will mean I don't need TomTom) connected to the laptop to give it the GPS signall. This will allow me to use the street navigation around town and be able to view the OziExplorer maps on the 7" screen in the dash and also have the Magellan maps showing up on the dash in the XL.

Phill, the crossover is definately what you want. You can even use it to find a restaurant nearby, it will give you their phone number and address. You can even get their marine charts and use it on the boat!!!

G'day

Phil, Just keep your options open.

If you're due for a phone upgrade, consider the Nokia 6110 Navigator.

I upgraded to this model, and mount it on a suction mount so it sits on the dash. the GPS is fantastic and software is route 66. All in one little device, saves spending x amount on a gps and x on a phone and x on a camera.

All restraunts, servos points of interest, everything is attainable just like a dedicated GPS. Really surprised me.

Thanks Dave. But a screen at 2.2inches is gettin a tad small for these old eyes. :o

Phones cost me zip anyway.... and a camera, apparently they are about 3 for $1 these days. ::)

The magellan is in the 1,300 $ range.

Do the Nokia's have Topo Maps overlays software ?
