With regard to tying leaders , do any of you tie your Bimini doubles as long, as a wind on leader. I believe the heavy game fishers tie them long to handle big fish close to the boat. Is this the only time that such a set up would be necessary?.

I tie short bimini doubles simply to increase the knot strength for the leader to main line (double). I think the longer doubles are to give the line more stretch when the fish is close. Maybe someone else will add to this.

That's what I love about this place, I was only thinking the same thing last night and low and behold the question is up for debate.

I can understand the logic of having quite a long double if you get a large specimen beside the boat and you need to man handle him over the last few yards, like a marlin etc.

Whilst I understand the concept of the double adding strength when tying different diameter lines to leaders, however wouldn't just making a loop out of say your braid and tie this off to your mono leader in the normal way, and cut off the tag end be the same? You would still have twice the amount of braid in contact with the mono if you tied a double or just made the loop.

I hope that this makes sense, I guess for me the issue is the need to tie a double for knot strength as opposed to forming a double.
