patrol 3 litre turbo

Thinking of buying a 03-05 nissan patrol wagon 3 litre turbo diesel in an automatic( under instruction of the boss).Have heard the manuals have probs with 5th gear after towing heavy loads for a while.has anyone else heard this or anything else nasty i should know about?

i own 03 patrol and have had no problems it is a manual and tow a van and my boat .

went through simmilar process of buying a gu patrol about 6 months ago,
i was looking for a 4.2 turbo diesel in about the 99-03 age, i did a bit or research on the 3.0 turbo desel, from what i found out the earlier 3.0 ts's had a bit of a habit of the turbo playing up, the series 2 and 3 didn't seem to have the problem. didn't hear anything about the gearbox
father in law has a 05 3.0 td, manual. it is pretty good, not as smooth (turbo lag) as mine, but tows 2.8 tonne of boat no problems.
the auto is only rated to tow 2.5 tonne (i think)
either way, most people i spoke to who owned a gu are pretty happy

bad car, theres a recall to do with the engine, they have problems with the turbo. guy at work went through two motors in 2 motnhs and a mate lost his motor

hi have 05 auto.3l STS ;cape york,towing,general driving on dirt..everything works..auto hubs/high low range..just sorts itself out in the rough stuff. Come from a lot of manual 4x4's first auto..real easy to drive. Don't go on beach but beach launching up north dead easy. Buy after 2004..all problems sorted by then. Nissan are a reputable manufacturer . cheers

Hi I work for a motor group witch has Nissan within it and have heard stories of earlier models shagging engines eg blowing holes thru pistons

I also heard of lots of problems with the 3.0 so went with the simplicity of the 4.2TD when I bought my GU.

I have a 04 GU 3lt diesel gu patrol and have had no problems.
Tow a boat from Bne to Rainbow Beach regularly with no problems
The GU 2.8lt patrol 01/02 had a problem with the inside of the sump was painted and at about 100000km the paint peals off and cloggs the oil filter and causes the engine to seize.
This problem has been fixed hence waited and bought my patrol in 04

Na, the early patrols dropped 5th when towing. But its all fixed up now.
