Hi all, just a report of a great trip up to 1770. We got out three days and fished down south, inner and outer wides. Found the reds in hostile country and they gave us all a hidding. I took along my mates young fella on our boat as his boat was full. I don't know what was better catching good fish or seeing the young bloke get into them. For those heading up ,there is plenty of yakka's on the bait ground out the front and good shows of fish on most reefs, better south and at the inner wides. We didn't have to head wide.

The humble hassar from a couple of Swains trips made it's way down (as fillets)
Those fillets were priceles :) for catching good sized fish ;)

How did the livies come on board ? Bait jigs or small hooks with bait ?

wilson bait jigs and take plenty as the mack's love to snack on loaded bait jigs on the bait ground

When you say "inner wides" how far out from 1770 are we talking.I am headed up that way in a few weeks and would love to try a fish outside.I have a new 5.5 meter savage alluminium cuddy cabin with 140 on back.
Would i be silly or desperate to go wide in a boat like that up there?I am reasonably careful by nature but the lure of catching my first red emporer diminishes the caution a little.
Thanks
Greggo

Hi Greggo

I have fished 1770 for the last 6 years and have been all over the reefs out wide. I had a 5.5 Profish aussie whaler and for example spent 3 days out in the lagoons at Fitzroy 2 years ago which is approx 30 nm from the bar. The innner wides are approx 18 nm. There is great fishing in closer like south bustard and excellant trolling etc within 100 mtrs of the bar. The swell generally dies off quicker behind the reef which can make for high speed runs, but when the wind is up is a nasty short chop similar to Morton Bay.

Like all boating, pick your days, carry safety gear including additional fuel, travel with other boats and keep in touch via radio's.

It's a great place and the fishing can be outstanding.
