Arrived back from Hong Kong on the 16/9/07.
Talking with a friend (a resident) and he advised me that there were no decent fish within 3km of the shore in Hong Kong nor any of the islands. I checked and there were no charter boat operators advertising trips, that dont mean there are none, just that I could not find them.
Taking tackle, I would suggest a 7-8 foot rod and something spooled with 2-4kg line.
I would sugest you try the islands Lamma, Lantau, or Park. The ferries leave from Central on Hong Kong side.
It's was also hard to find a tackle shop. Ask the concierge in your hotel.
Where are you planning to stay? Been there many times and can offer some recommendations, if required.
Heres a good sight to start you off .http://www.tackletour.com/reviewHK.html

Hi Nibbler. I lived in Hong Kong for two years in the early 80s. Things will have changed somewhat since then, but we regularly saw locals fishing around the piers, rocky waterfronts etc and even at the Star Ferry Terminals.
Lots of fish caught, but don't think we ever saw anything over 4 or 5 inches long.
Out at some of the outer Islands, I suspect you might do better and the environment is much better and water cleaner. Back then, there were some fish farms near Llama Island (short ferry ride from either Central or Aberdeen). If they are still there, there are probably some escapies around.
If you can't catch anythinig and want a feed of seafood, back then, the seafood restaurants at Llama Island were sensational. Probably gone a bit up market since then (when they were all outdoor on stilt platforms over the water).
Have a good time and hope you find somewhere to have a fish.

mate, your best bet is to buy a fishing mag off the newspaper vendor, look at the pics on the mag and u will be amazed at what fish they are getting in the waters.
land based, casting lures, you will get sea bass, black bream (depending on size of lures). snapper off the rocks at the islands...
i was back in hong kong last christmas and the guy at the tackle store wanted me to go on a charter out to the 'ching ma bridge' where you get huge sea bass off the pylons on lures..
do a search on sea bass on youtube and you will know what fish i am talking about. mate, so wat i advice is that you get a magazine, look at the tackle shop ads, visit the shop and ask the guy abt any boat charters out.
they are pretty cheap, but they fish out of bum boats...
but they will probably drain your pocket seeing that you are 'guai lo' caucasian..
bring lure casting gear, the standard bream, light snapper spinning outfit, you will be fine.
hope u get something...
