You can buy purpose built rod tubes up to 7ft. but they are fairly expensive. The cheapest way is go to plumbing outlet and get a length of lightweight pvc tubing large enough to fit your rod/rods in and 2 end caps. Glue a bit of foam inside each end cap, glue one end onto tubing and just tape the other end on after inserting the rod/rods. You can add a shoulder stap if you like made up of tape of an old tie down strap. Don't forget to take some tape with you for the return journey. Using the lightweght tubing means its not too heavy for carrying. A cloth rod bag will give extra protection in the rod tube.
I use this method if travelling on a plane/bus/train or goig bush camping. If travelling by car, I remove the reels and put in a reel bag and put into a small sports bag. The rods, I have cloth rod bags for each rod. Then I put them in a bundle and secure with some rod wraps available at most tackle shops. Hope this helps.
Jeff.
Jarvis walker have a tube around 7'long that holds about 4 rods. around the $30 mark. i got mine at big w on sale for $20. usually throw it in the back of the ute or on the boat floor. had it for a couple of years without any probs. not fantastic, but good value for money..

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ,,,,,,, sorry,,, i just noticed this post is from someone in melbourne asking about protection,,,,,,, (its my warped sense of humour,,,,disregard the above)
seriously though,,,, pvc tubing is as ststed by others,,,cheap,,, but very effective,,, and on smaller rods it can be fixed to the inner side of your gunnel to stow unwanted rods outta the way when fishing,,,, or if ya have a 4b/wagon,, fix it under the tray bed or onside of the chassis rail whilst motoring,,,,
rod holders do the same i 'spose,, but you have drama's with legalities in certain areas
